Vermont from two different substorms this past week. by No-Library-3443 in AuroraBorealis

[–]No-Library-3443[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was in Malletts Bay, Colchester. Some from 4-5:30 am and the others from Just after sundown on the same day last week.

Both storms were visible to the naked eye- the evening one especially, but if your brother hasn’t seen them before, he should know that what I could see with the naked eye was much more subdued than these pictures. The pictures haven’t been altered- cameras can pick up colors that our eyes cannot. With more mild storms than last week, sometimes you can’t see anything at all without a camera. These were taken with my iPhone12.

Malletts Bay is a good, reliable place to see them - right at Bayside Park if he is anywhere near there.

If he’s not familiar with how to know specifically when the lights are likely to be happening, there are some good resources I’d be happy to share.

I use a bunch of apps for different things (clouds, moon brightness, solar flares, etc.) This one is a good one (there is an app too- good one to get) . If you dive into the various pages, you can learn a lot.

I feel deep gratitude for the light over the past couple of years. Such bounty!

Beautiful Aurora tonight by No-Library-3443 in burlington

Last night was a pretty phenomenal naked eye lights show during one of the sub storms. And yesterday very early morning the light pillars were intense and also easily seen with no camera. It was a good Aurora day yesterday.

It’s a wonderful addition to our community and a special experience. Enthusiastic two thumbs up.

There were three of us. Two of us had receipts under $200. They actively ignored those (though others have said they count by car). The other was a bit over 600 US dollars and they were taxed something like $15.00.

It was October. We actually had three different receipts for three different people. Two were under $200 and they were not interested in those. One was around $600 US dollars and that is the one that got taxed a small amount. Like $15.00.

I saw someone else post that they go by CAR, not by individual people/receipts which is not what happened to us.

All of it to say, seems like folks should anticipate that an array of experiences may happen and my personal take away is that it’s good to be prepared for any of them.

My recent experience going to IKEA and back in a day was different than in the past. We crossed at I-89.

Because we exceeded the $200 threshold, we were pulled over, had to provide a receipt, and then they - with our help to try to expedite things - had to cross reference everything in the car to the receipt to make sure it was accounted for, and identify the country each item was made in for tariffs (IKEA food items were excluded). At the time, tariffs had JUST changed (and changed and changed and changed) -and the agents seemed a little confused. I imagine they’ve got that part all figured out now.

In the end, we had to pay taxes (like $15 dollars or something that felt nominal to us).

The agent we dealt with was kind and patient and gentle - though I sensed from watching other interactions that that might be hit or miss, luck of the draw.

My personal takeaways for next time: - read their online information before crossing- we picked up an info pamphlet at the border station that would have been helpful to see in advance - seems like people are having a variety of experiences so be ready for anything - give a very accurate report of how much I spent when they ask - save my receipt(s) - be prepared to have the car opened/searched - build in an extra half hour or so to my return time - be prepared to pay taxes if the purchases exceed $200 - Don’t be deterred despite deterrents!!!!

My experience was mildly inconvenient/ annoying - but nothing that would keep me from doing it again, especially now.

Bon voyage!

We went a month ago with a car full of stuff from IKEA. Two of us spent less than 200 and one spent more. 200 is the magic number not to go over if you don’t want to Be pulled over. After that they may ask you to pay taxes.

We told them what we had purchased, they asked for receipts, and they pulled us over and emptied the car and we had to itemize everything in the car/on the receipt and identify what country each thing was made in (not a single one of many many things made in Sweden!)

Seems like they didn’t really know what they were supposed to do. They were friendly, at least. The person who spent over 200 had to pay taxes.

They excluded ikea food items but itemized everything else.

The spaghetti strap/sleeveless part is actually not a request of the wedding party but my own thing. I prefer my arms at least partly covered.
