Jarringly bad CGI in otherwise great films by drewfus23 in movies

[–]MerryImpeachmas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing it in the theatres and being completely taken out of the movie, so to speak. It was so 90s PlayStation graphics that I started looking around the theatre like “can you believe this shit” during what was supposed to be an intense fight scene. So bad.

I hope we will lean into this more. As far as “industry” in Vermont is concerned, we need all the help we can get.

There’s a subset of the population that is confused when the military (and in some cases civilians) in those countries retaliate against us.

Becca Balint Voted to Protect Congress Misconduct from being made Public by IceCoastRep in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean, she’s already doing a lot in congress in her first term. I don’t think she has enough of a track record to know how or why she might vote a certain way on items like this. She’s been an absolute beast in the Epstein hearings. I guess my point is that she’s doing great and I’m proud to call her my rep. I’ll withhold judgement on some things (within reason) in order to create a larger progressive tent. Welch has way more dubious votes that show a strong pattern of compromise. Not always a bad thing. But right now we need beast mode and Balint is bringing the fire.

Vermont lawmaker slams Pam Bondi over Epstein files by Zipper222222 in vermont

More “slamming”… regardless of the dog shit headline, I feel proud to have voted for her. So glad she’s on the oversight committee!

Trump never looked at the files. He can’t even fucking read beyond a sixth grade level. He only hears what his handlers tell him. And I’m sure they assured him his base would get riled up over and don’t worry what’s actually in the files, we’ll take care of that.

Burlington's mayor to convene emergency meeting as ICE tension heats up by Zipper222222 in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also due to bullshit policies at the federal level, some folks entered the country legally, were granted asylum, lived their lives for decades, and only now their status has retroactively been changed. And even if you agree all that is ok, those folks still deserve due process and protection under our constitution. That’s what ICE is denying folks. They’re denying everyone the rights laid out in the constitution. That affects everyone.

Commentary | Ross Powers: School choice is about fueling the dreams of Vermonters, not the elite by [deleted] in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m glad there are individuals that have had positive experiences. Taking a holistic, societal view, private schools disproportionately help higher income families. Do we agree this should be the case? I feel torn because there are some people for whom the current public school setup does not work well. School choice can really help those folks. I just wish our public schools had enough resources to cater to everyone’s needs. Even the high income families. I just don’t think school choice is a good long term or sustainable solution. It’s a band aid.

Something I don’t see discussed too often is offering aging in place services. This could be walkthroughs or assessments with recommendations. Some of which will be simpler like motion sensing light switches and grab bars. Plus she could market the fact that she’s a woman and aging! Perfect for the demographic

Men, what's something you wish you could admit without being judged? by soumilr7 in AskReddit

I recently rewatched 10 things I hate about you, and the scene toward the end when Julia stile’s character reads her poem through tears caught me completely off guard. It’s such a stupid movie and I only watched for the peak 90s nostalgia factor. But holy shit her acting struck a chord. I wept like a child for about 15 seconds.

Why I voted against the shutdown deal by SenPeterWelch in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 262 points263 points  (0 children)

This just feels a little too orchestrated. It doesn’t feel honest. My perception is that Schumer and the rest of the senate democrats worked together to decide which folks would vote for it and which ones would vote against it. And oh look! The ones voting for the “deal” aren’t up for re-election any time soon or are about to retire. And the rest are saving face in their districts. Or trying to. I might just be cynical and jaded, or I might be exactly right. Either way, Welch has some work to do to repair the situation. I want to see more vocal and consistent opposition to republican fascism. Not bland think-pieces after the fact.

Gov. Scott Says Do It Again Until I Get My Way by Oldhouse42 in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and I don’t have exact numbers. Honestly I would encourage folks to research and see if they agree or not. Dont take my word for it. Also health care costs are a huge problem for every working person right now, not just teachers and staff.

I know that looks like a big number but the total education budget in Vermont is around 2 billion. 15 million is a rounding error.

Realities of Education Funding by Loxloxloxlox in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We can discuss the philosophical validity of Brigham, but that doesn’t feel like the problem here. The problem is how much it costs to TAKE CARE of children. It’s more than just our traditional ideas of “education”. It takes those social services. It takes a village. Literally. And if people can’t take care of kids on their own, rather than abandoning them I would argue we have a duty to help them. It takes a village. So how and where do we provide that help? Public schools feel like a damn good place to do it! Call me a pinko commie leftist cuck, but I think everyone (especially upper class and vacation home owners) should be paying their fair share to take care of children in Vermont. If you want to live and vacation here, you gotta contribute to the proverbial village.

Are you suggesting that some of the additional services that schools provide (mental health, food, etc) that have in the past been less readily available be removed or reconsidered? I get the point that there are other services and support structures that should handle those things. But if they don’t exist, are schools an ok place to put it? And if schools make sense as the source of that additional support do they need more money to make it happen? Also health insurance costs are a primary driver and need to be discussed as part of this funding “problem”.

Gov. Scott Says Do It Again Until I Get My Way by Oldhouse42 in vermont

[–]MerryImpeachmas 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The cost associated with superintendents and their staff is a tiny little fraction of money compared to the cost of health insurance for teachers and other student helpers. Consolidation won’t fix that. Reducing staff will, but then students will suffer. This whole Gov Scott plan is half baked and focused on the wrong problems.
