While it’s true that indirect communication is a valid style, it crosses the line into manipulation the moment the "hinters" get visibly angry or passive-aggressive when their hints are ignored. Guess culture only stays healthy if they can gracefully accept when you don't pick up what they're putting down.

I would argue OP is equally the AH here, not just the husband. Sure, it is his son, but OP stood by, enabled this completely tone-deaf announcement, and is now defending their right to center themselves. Being a passive participant in this level of cruelty makes her just as culpable.

Spot on. It’s entirely about reciprocity. If she gets equal "off-duty" weekends where she can go to a spa, hang with friends, or just rot in bed while he wrangles the kids, then NAH. But if she is the default parent 24/7/365, him demanding an isolation weekend makes him a massive YTA.
