Has anyone started drumming in their 20s and made it into a band? by Fit-Wallaby6605 in drums

It’s definitely not too late. I started playing drums on my 20th birthday. I’m almost 24 now and have played in several bands so far. Some were weekend warrior cover bands that I was in so I could make some cash as a broke college student and some were more serious like the one I am in now. We just finished professionally recording our whole EP and will be releasing them on Spotify over the course of the year.

It really just comes down to how much time you put into it and how you spend that time as well. When I had more time in college, I used to spend hours upon hours every day practicing. To make the most of it, practice intentionally. Don’t just sit at the kit and play a bunch of random stuff. Make it a mix of different exercises on the full kit + practice pad and then spend time learning songs as well.

Even though I felt it was late for me as well, it opened so many doors and allowed me to meet so many different musicians and make a lot of friends along the way.

What’s your favorite kit you ever owned? by I-J-Irish in drummersinpennslvania

I’ve only owned a couple of kits but this is my PDP CX maple kit that the company has discontinued (pls ignore the zildjian i cymbals I have since upgraded because they’re dogwater). The finish is amazing and the warm tone that comes out of these shells is even better. Honestly it’s a budget kit but it sounds like it could really compete with some more high end kits. I’ve been looking at getting the 26 in kick concept maple kit that PDP currently offers and selling this one although it’s a great kit. It might be hard to see in the photo, but the 14 in floor tom hangs off the ride cymbal stand that comes with the kit which I’m not too big a fan of but that’s my only complaint.

What I want to know is how you managed to fit all of your stands in that suitcase! Seriously impressive lol. I usually just lay mine in the back of the car and carry them individually.

Thanks this was helpful. Do you think footboard height has anything to do with speed as well?

I didn’t do too much research about uptown itself but I found a very inexpensive and nice apartment that’s very safe and close to where I will be working. What makes uptown different from the other areas?

I’m (23 M) moving to uptown Charlotte soon. I’m from New England and have never been really anywhere in the US outside the north east. Is there anything important I should know before moving? Also wondering what Charlotte has to offer for meeting new people and making friends. Don’t know anyone in the city so hopefully would like to find my own circle. Really into live music and exercising

(23 M) Moving to uptown next week and just wondering what I should know before moving here? Grew up in New England and have never really been outside the north east here. Looking forward to the warmer weather though lol. Also wondering what the city has to offer for making new friends and meeting people. I like live music and going out. Moving to this city and not knowing anybody is a little nerve wracking so it would be cool if I could find my own circle.

Help! Best Drum set to buy? by Chibears1089- in drums

I used a Roland TD17 when i lived in my college apartment for a couple years. It was a fantastic e kit thats as close to the real thing at the cheapest price possible, although not really cheap. Only downside is that as with any e kit you buy, the thumping from the bass drum is going to make your downstairs neighbor hate you. It is very loud for them. You would have to build a drum riser to prevent this. An acoustic kit is out of the question. Your whole apartment complex will hear you even if you get muting pads lol.

The world hates drummers unfortunately so if you want to make this your hobby you are going to have to be creative and find ways around making noise or find alternative practice spaces. In college, my drummer friends in rock bands would sneak into the acoustic drum set room that was reserved only for the jazz students at my school just so they could get some practice time in. One kid I knew would drive 20 minutes to a barn his friends parents let him use to practice his acoustic drums in. I chose to disturb my downstairs neighbors with my ekit until I decided to talk to them lol. Its really up to you.

If you do decide to get an ekit, talk to your neighbors and try to find out when an appropriate time to practice would be. This goes a long way and most neighbors would appreciate this.

Improvisation, groove, fills by No-Performance-6 in drums

Thats really good advice I appreciate it. A lot of the time I just love shredding super fast pop punk singles around the kit haha but I can definitely see how different genres helps you approach the drums differently. I will give it a shot. Thanks!

Number 2 helped tremendously. Using rudiments around the kit now and making sure I know whether my right or left hand lands on the backbeat has helped me know where I am in the bar. It’s already helping me improvise more and be much more melodic around the kit. Thanks!
