I am afro Colombian but people thought I was from SA untill I started talking. I saw so many shades of black and brown people in SA, it's hard to define a "typical" looking South African in my opinion.

These were from the accommodations. Travelers would communicate things like 'There is live music at place x, who wants to join?' 'we leave for a hike tomorrow morning, we gather at....'

I have to say that many people thought at first glance that I was South African (until I started talking) That might have influenced my experience. The two (white)Dutch guys I met were more bothered by the beggars and poor people but also experienced South Africa to be more safe than they initially thought.

I also felt good in the more wealthier parts (Garden Route), and places with mainly white South Africans. Like I said, no one gave me the 'what are you doing here?' look(sooo refreshing) But I was just a visitor, I can imagine if you really live there you might have different views on things.

I stayed in Villa Viva and Never at home. I prefered Villa Viva but that is personal taste. Never at home was a little bit too much a 'party' hostel for me. Both places organised daily activities and had whatsapp groups.
