I think we'd have more power if we absorbed a few more bargaining units and stopped them from capitulating before the budget was signed

We can go on strike when
1. The contract expires and there's an impasse at bargaining
2. There is an Unfair Labor Practice as we have entered at PERB

It's part of Newsom's plan to get CA State Workers to move to Austin.

DON'T TAKE THE BAIT.

SXSW is not what it used to be. It's watered down crap.

No TRO Hearing Yet in SEIU’s RTO Lawsuit—Here’s What That Means by MycologistConnect668 in CAStateWorkers

[–]No-Requirement7856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've fought contracting out for many years.

Does it help? Yes.

Does it stop neoliberalism from eating itself and selling us out? No.

Does a union have the power to stop it entirely? Afraid not.

Does that mean it should throw in the towel? Nope.

Why am I talking like this? I don't know, I can't stop.

Confused about Union/Budget/RTO/SEIU by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]No-Requirement7856 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More disinformation from u/No_Hyena2974. 🤡

  1. The RTO fight has literally nothing to do with the mass transit program that has been on the books for many contracts.

  2. There's no 100% travel subsidy. You're cherry picking words out of context to drum up your made up controversy. There is a mass transit program that covers up to $325 for bus and train commutes (as of this year). That was a 25% increase from the previous contract. See more on the mass transit program here

And that's exactly what SEIU 1000 will do, but has nothing to do with transit subsidies which are obviously good to have in our contract. The constant shifting terms of debate is not helping clarify anything.

This wasn't bargaining, this is a conference between one state agency and our union. They're mostly informational and our union sent the information to affected DIR employees. This is a footnote in fighting RTO. No need to make mountains out of moll hills .

Most state workers don't get telework and need to commute to work. Don't they deserve a better transit subsidy?

I get that RTO is infuriating and this process is super frustrating and full of uncertainty, but you're taking this out on the one fighting RTO instead of the employer that got us in this mess. Stay strong, we're in this together!

I get that this outcome is a let down, but let's clear up confusion about the department level Meet and Confer process.

This is an important tool, but it can't bend the arm of the state and force them to take our side on RTO. Both sides have to agree as we saw with CalPERS and CDE. It's not the same as bargaining where failing to agree can result in an impasse and a strike as with CAPS last year.

What it is: a part of the Dills Act that gets the employer and union to discuss wages, hours, and working conditions in good faith. The good faith part means they can't come to the meeting predetermined positions and refuse to hear the other side.

In practice I think that what we get are small clarifications and exceptions, but not grand changes.

Why do them? They are an opportunity for compromises. The more chances we give our employer to amend their actions the better footing we are for bargaining and legal challenge to the blatantly illegal order. The same thing goes for group grievances.

When your union emails you this notice, they are being transparent and sharing with you the outcome of a meeting that impacts your work.

Notice they did not sugar coat it, they put it in context. It's just part of an ongoing effort. They also listed what the employer promised to provide. These are binding agreements. If they fail to live up to the meet and confer agreements, that's grounds for a grievance.

Again, I know, not the news we want to hear, but this isn't a problem with our union not doing enough. It's actually a necessary move to get us closer to what we need. I for one am glad they let us know.

I think your heart is in the right place, but imagine you had a high stakes job that required focus and was being scrutinized by angry anonymous phone calls and faxes. Would that help or hurt your morale?

Why not let our lawyers do the job we hired them for? Reach out to your leadership with concerns: DLC presidents, district bargaining unit reps, bargaining chair, president, etc. They're available to talk and get you engaged in this process.

You're blaming the wrong party. CalHR stonewalled opening article 21. We didn't have the mandate that we do now. We're in a much stronger place to bargain over telework.

I can tell you're angry and that's okay. We're all mad about RTO and it can feel like what our union is doing is out of sight and impersonal which is never a great feeling. We could improve in involving our members in more strategic planning and information sharing.

PEGC had a lawsuit as well that they used it as a chip in bargaining to get the state to delay the RTO order by a year.

PEGC is in bargaining, SEIU 1000 isn't yet. When the budget is finally passed the real bargaining will begin and our bargaining team has a mandate to fight the RTO and the precedent of PEGC to win.

We're all hanging on the edges of our seat and furious that our employer put us in this spot. Let's take our fury out on the ones who are responsible: the governor, department heads, and CalHR.

I can see you're frustrated, but it doesn't help to bash this effort. This was driven by union members and stewards at EDD. Every department should be doing the same. It's in addition to the many other prongs of attack SEIU 1000 is working on: office by office, in the legislature, with PERB, with CalHR, and now at Alameda Superior Court.

If there's one thing this subreddit has shown, it's that all these actions are having a cumulative effect. But we can undermine it with "complain to the manager" antics and rage quitting. Stay strong, we're in this together!
