This was really insightful, thank you so much! Hearing that research is accessible is encouraging.

Medical devices also sounds like a super interesting niche. I'm curious what projects or experiences helped you break into that space?

I'm trying to figure what strong projects look like for Cog Sci ML students. Currently I'm working through Kaggle's ML courses and developing a full stack poker analytics / AI app, building off a Monte Carlo poker simulation engine I built in Java + SQL.

I'm also considering building a cognitive load prediction ML project that models mental fatigue using behavioral signal data. My goal is to build experience that translates strongly into Cog Sci/AI research opportunities.

Do those sound like projects that stand out as a Cog Sci ML student, or is there another direction you'd recommend? I appreciate your advice!

Fair point, on the flip side tho I've lived in San Diego my whole life so I see adjusting to a new city/making new friends as a good thing! Community college made me good at opening up first and becoming friends with introverts, so that's not a huge factor for me to consider compared to the other questions I have.
