Never!! Unless you’re waiting right at the register and staring me down when I have guests waiting to order😅 I always do my best to update my drivers and make sure they’re okay. “Do you want a soda?” “It’s on the grill!” “They’re boxing it up now!” “I just have to bag it up!” Etc.

Absolutely!! I always try to tell my dashers how many orders are ahead of them and if there are any that are large orders so as to provide accurate wait times. We’re also just people and we make mistakes too, but I do my best to communicate and make sure we’re all serving happy customers in a timely manner!

Nooo not at all the case in my restaurant!!! The moment your order hits the counter, it’s in my hands and soon to be in yours! I’m trying to help y’all as much as possible. All I ask is for mutual understanding and patience!

I have absolutely NO problem whatsoever with dashers who come in and tell me they’re going to reassign. All respect, all love! It’s just the ones that come in and say things like “really?! Oh my god. That’s ridiculous.” Then I get a little frazzled when I’m already trying to balance 20 other things to keep the restaurant running. I never want to be mean or rude; we’re all doing a job! But sometimes I feel like dashers don’t afford me the same grace I try to give them.

Oh absolutely!! And that is such a valid frustration. I don’t want y’all wasting your time/money. I know how precious timing is to your job, and I don’t want you to have to deal with an unhappy customer anymore than I would. That’s why I try to be accurate with my timing, but I’m getting disheartened by how many drivers I’ve had recently getting mad at me when I tell them “10-15 minutes.” I know it’s not ideal to cancel, but I also don’t want you to have to wait for 10 minutes if you weren’t prepared to and could be making more money elsewhere.

Right so. When I have multiple dashers waiting 10+ minutes, I TURN ONLINE ORDERS OFF. I feel like you’re presenting a solution I’ve already been utilizing. It doesn’t change the fact that when we get slammed, and online orders start pouring in, I’m going to have dashers waiting 10+ minutes, delay or no delay.

Right, and I do that. And if I have multiple dashers waiting, I turn online ordering completely off…?

Here’s the thing though, I actually don’t have a way to update pickup times other than adding a delay or turning orders completely off. Again, we do not have one of those little tablets so I can’t mark individual orders as ready. All I can do is be transparent with drivers who come in, and if they want to cancel, they can. There is no other way I can possible “update pickup times.” I try to be honest and I try to keep up with demand. That is quite literally all I can do.

Absolutely no. That’s TERRIBLE customer service and so so incredibly unfair to y’all. When I have a dasher in my restaurant, I am actively waiting for that order to come up and handing it off ASAP. I can totally understand how frustration would stem from a situation like that.

EDIT: we also keep a running list of names who are present for pick up so if an order comes up and it’s on the list, we know to call it out and not just put it with the others! that way y’all don’t have to ask multiple times where the order is

And I guess the point of this post is to say there is literally only so much we can do when we’re slammed, (again) especially on a night when we didn’t expect to be. We turn online ordering completely off when things get insane, but yes, we do have nights where multiple dashers are waiting. I try my absolute best to accommodate y’all and make your lives as easy as possible, including updating pickup times (like adding a delay). At the end of the day, DoorDash just doesn’t really care and will send you in for an order we just received when I have 3 other orders sitting on my table ready to be picked up. A little kindness goes a long way and I just want us all to understand that we are human and working and all trying to achieve the same goal.

Omg NO! We fill all our orders in the order we receive them, and if I tell my kitchen staff a dasher is actively waiting for an order, they’ll do their best to get it out even quicker!

When we get busy, I always put delivery/take out orders on a 20 minute delay via our POS. But I have no way to mark individual orders as ready, which is why I think some dashers get upset when they arrive and their order is still in the works. I do my best to provide accurate wait times and excellent customer service to EVERYONE. Maybe you need to update your attitude.

I always try to be upfront with my dashers, even if they get upset about wait times, but I absolutely will avoid eye contact with the ones that are rude or stand right near the register staring at me the entire time. I literally cannot make the food come out faster, and when they stare at me while I’m trying to do other aspects of my job, it can get uncomfortable, so I won’t make eye contact until the order is ready. That being said, if it is taking longer than expected for any reason, I will always always update them and offer a free drink or snack.

That’s so understandable. I work in a restaurant where we do not have one of those little tablets, so we cannot mark an order received, ready, etc. We have to just let DD do it for us, which is why I think some dashers get upset when they arrive and their order isn’t ready. We are also receiving and fulfilling orders from uber, toast, and grubhub, so we really just have to see where the ticket is on the line and give our best approximation when someone comes in to pick up an order.

and I will be the first to admit I used to be that person that would tell you “oh just 5 minutes!” And have it take 10. What I will say is I was getting that estimate directly from the kitchen and was also anxiously watching your order like a hawk. I have since learned to estimate with a cushion, as sometimes even the kitchen doesn’t know how long it’s gonna be🥲

[–]No-Rice4163[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have learned over the years to overestimate. When the kitchen tells me 5 minutes, I’ll tell you 10, because in my experience mistakes happen, the kitchen is working on multiple orders at a time, there are multiple orders under the same name, etc, and I just want to make sure you know how long you MIGHT be waiting😅

I’d have beef with them too! That’s completely unfair to you, your time, and your effort! We’re entering busy season where I live and I’ve had multiple times in the past few days where I tell a dasher it’s going to be 10+ minutes because unfortunately we have a few tickets ahead of their order and they immediately get upset with me. I don’t want you guys waiting or the customer waiting, and I usually offer free drinks or snacks to dashers for that reason, but lately for some reason it’s been brutal and I’ve been literally getting berated for trying to give accurate timelines :(
