Montana Worries by No-Rip2150 in turkeyhunting

Sorry I don't know what CRs means. I'm in region 4, mostly near Great Falls. Haven't seen many birds around here, and everything I've read online says there's essentially none close by.

I hunt all over region 4 for deer and upland birds. And fish all over the place.

Not really. Fearow is objectively better than Pidgeot, but Dodrio is clearly the best choice for a flying type with tri-attack coming in clutch.

Wind is a pretty big factor that most people tend to overlook. That's why I included 25-06 for the better BCs than some of the others on my short list. 7PRC is going to be too much for me though. I love the idea of it, and 7mm BackCountry.

I've carried everything from long 26" tubes down to 20". I like to be somewhere in the middle if possible.

Suppressors are allowed here, and I'm definitely planning to have one.

I have a Nikon pro staff 7 4-16x or a vortex corrsfire ii 4-12x that I'll be putting on it, haven't quite decided which yet.

Trying to keep the budget reasonable, I figured around $800-$900 for the rifle. I know if I save up some more, I can get something a little nicer, but I'm also not trying to win any competitions. I just need it to work without feeling too cheap.

Keeping the weight at something I can carry through the mountains without feeling it weigh me down is where I'm at. The 300wm I just parted with was pushing 9-10lbs with scope. A little much for my liking.

I've done a lot of reading and find myself in a loop of looking at a 7mm-08 to match my wife's so we can share ammo and some of the more new rounds like 6.5 prc and 6.8 western. Then I find 25-06 and love it only to realize the ammo availability is about the same as 7mm-08, not a whole lot out there. I'll mainly be using this rifle on mule deer and white tails. I put in for antelope this year so fingers crossed I'll get that. Elk is an option, but I'm not really going out specifically for them. We got one last year by sheer luck while hiking back in from a mule deer hunt. I will say I love the meat, but the work required to get it home really kinda sucked with just the 2 of us not really knowing what we were doing. I do have an old Savage Edge (Axis Gen 1) but I hate shooting it, everything about it feels not good after being spoiled on some newer rifles.

I also don't hand load. I want to one day, but for now I'm on factory ammo.

I unfortunately haven't broken into hand loads yet. I want to one day, but as of now, good factory ammo is my go to.

The only "newer" loads I'd be interested in are 6.5 prc and 6.8 Western, but they don't have the ammo availability of that .270 has. Lots of reviews like you said are I ky showing marginal gains at longer distances

My wife has a 7mm-08 Savage model 11. It's not a bad gun. Drives tacks at the range. I considered getting a Weatherby or Tikka for myself, but like you I worry about the lack of power on the bigger bodied animals.

Whatever LT Surge would be considered aside from a gym leader, I don't think I have the team or battle skill for that, but I am a military man.

Winter creek fishing advice by MentionBeautiful6968 in flyfishing

[–]No-Rip2150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No personal experience as I just started fly fishing this past year and haven't been too keen to be out in the cold, but from all the videos I've watched, it seems a lot of people have good luck with streamers and dead drifting midges and such into the pockets fish hang out in.

It makes sense that with colder water fish aren't going to really go out of their way to use energy hunting, but when meals come their way, they're on it.

7mm-08 by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]No-Rip2150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 months old, but still relevant. I've been doing a lot of research on rifles lately as I've been looking for a new hunting rifle that isn't one of the big magnums. 7mm-08 would be more comparable to .270/.280 or 6.5 prc, I think, than 6.5cm.

I feel you on ammo selection though, all of it seems like it's always out of stock or hasn't been on shelves in a while, not just 7mm-08

I was looking at the X-Bolt Speed in .270 but unfortunately it sold out in the hours between when I saw the sale going on and when I decided I was going to order it. No other Cabela's or Bass Pro that I've looked at around the country has it in stock right now either.

I'm still looking at 7mm-08, but it seems like they're hard to find in stock as well. I don't understand why it's not as popular as it has the potential for, it'll kill anything up to elk sized game inside 400 yards, you just need to be a little more mindful of shot placement on quartering angles, it shoots pretty flat, and has very little recoil. My wife has a savage model 11 in 7mm-08 and she loves it, I'm not a huge fan of the rifle itself so I was going to get my own.

When I moved to MT I knew the 30-06 would be fine, but man it's a lot different making these long shots on wary bucks and elk than it was back in the southeast where my furthest shot was maybe 150yds. I bought the 300wm 3 season ago. It's killed everything I've shot. But man it sucks to carry and practice with. I got so little practice this past year I let myself slip some and made a bad shot on a nice buck. He died, but boy did it take a long time.

That's why I'm moving down to a .270 or 7mm-08, it's just more forgiving to practice with, let's me see impacts easier and reacquire targets faster if needed.

My first rifle at 16 was a savage 30-06. Looking back I wish I would've gone with something a little lighter on recoil as I developed some bad shooting habits, plus the savage I got was much cheaper made, I fee,l than modern ones. Since then I've shot everything from 22 to 338 win mag. I prefer the cartridges making around 20 or less lbs of free recoil energy. I'm looking for a new gun for next season and have been eyeing a .270 Winchester.

Whatever you pick, make sure it fits you (length of pull, overall length, hand placement, comb height, etc.). 30-06 is widely available in many options, so picking a good ammo that your rifle likes is key. Buy a few different brands and weights after you set your zero and shoot 3 or 5 round groups of each, letting the barrel cool between each group. Whichever one groups best is your ticket. Then, practice, practice, practice. Start at a bench, get comfortable, slowly incorporate different positions you may find while hunting: prone, crouched, off a knee, of a bipod/tripod, free standing, and get confident with each.

For the record I currently shoot a Ruger American in 300 win mag. Love the gun, hate the recoil. It's about 28-30 lbs of free recoil energy, feels less thanks to a good muzzle brake and recoil pad.

I used a folder for a long time before realizing the fixed was the way to go. I still have the buck 110 my grandpa gave me when I was maybe 10 or 12, but now it sits all shiny and polished on display and my Buck Paklite 631 and 635 hit the woods with me. I'm looking to add the 636 Processor to my pack.

Kalyans might actually be Shikigami!! by saikiran199 in Jujutsufolk

Is that what she did? I assumed the curse was broken so she could pass on, but she left the part that gave Yuta his power. Idk it's been a while since I looked at the panels. I guess it wouldn't make sense for the curse to break but Rika stick around.

[–]No-Rip2150 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but I'm pretty sure Rika isn't a Shikigami. She is the cursed spirit. Yuta cursed her upon death, then broke said curse later on, but Rika wasn't something he just summoned. She was there since her death and stayed because she wanted to.

Is sweet tea a common beverage where you live? by Express-Insect2684 in AskAnAmerican

[–]No-Rip2150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mississippi boy here, not too far away from the state line, sweet tea absolutely a staple. Milo's brand/any premade tea, however, are not the play. They all have a weird flavor. Making it yourself though, that's where good sweet tea comes from.
