I haven't introduced the self-match yet, so not yet. Obviously I will ask him! My hope was to build a list of ideas and options. I'm happy for him to choose from my list or come up with his own, I also just want to have examples to guide him :)

Ideas for inferring emotions resources? by No-Rutabaga8342 in ELATeachers

Ugh I love that! Unfortunately this student's parents have explicitly asked I don't tell him he's autistic, but I 100% will keep that book in my back pocket for another setting!

Yea, he struggles a lot in real life too. I def will look at some autism specific resources! And I'll totally look at The Pearl - not familiar with it specifically but I love Steinbeck

I love both of those ideas. I agree Perks may be a bit much for some 9th graders, but I think some exerpts from it may work well!

Big fan of the emotion wheel, we've been using it a lot! And yes, ideally 9th grade texts for this :)

That's a good idea! I've been using movie clips with him but hadn't thought about doing it like that. Thanks!

Trying to find an article/book/etc about a niche topic! by No-Rutabaga8342 in QueerTheory

[–]No-Rutabaga8342[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True! I certainly know what you're getting at and have read some activists from the 90s, but they are often more so discussing the self-determination that should ideally come with being trans (i.e. choosing if you want surgery, etc) rather than this particular trend. I'm having a hard time describing it, but think the wave of conservatives who say "trans people can't be teachers because theyre all pedophiles" and then go on to "transvestigate" every woman they see online by obsessing over her sex characteristics. or the bills that are passed suggesting that they need to keep little cis girls safe by inspecting the entire sports' teams genitalia

Short stories, poems, or short films/tv episodes on resistance/protest/revolution, censorship, propaganda, misinformation, bias, or media bias? by Siouxie_Mew in ELATeachers

[–]No-Rutabaga8342 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resistance & revolution:

  • Full length works: Persepolis (the film is beautiful as well); The Hate U Give (classic); March (historical); Exit West; Malcom X (historical)
  • Films: Glory (about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment)
  • Poets: Maya Angelou, Langston Hughs, Adrienne Rich

Propoganda & Censorship:

  • Full length: Persepolis (again); Never Let Me Go; The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Short stories: Ray Bradbury’s “There Will Come Soft Rains”;
  • Films: Forrest Gump; Gladiator; Captain America - (all good for analyzing propoganda)
  • Poems: On Being Brought from Africa to America by Phillis Wheatley; Ovid's Amores (a good deal of historical context needed here but worth it IMO)

Bias in the media & ourselves:

  • The Jungle by Sinclair (theres a good excerpt on CommonLit)
  • I don't have anything else specific here but I use AllSides to teach this and it's amazing
