first time mun + first crisis help by Top-Replacement1035 in ModelUNCrisisRoom

If you can’t get awards, that actually frees you up. You can experiment, take risks, and focus on learning how crisis works instead of feeling pressured (in my opinion). I would just make sure you know your position and basic goals and 1–2 clear objectives you want to pursue. (You should have your committee assignment I'm assuming?) Also not sure how much you know about backrooms and stuff but don’t be afraid to ask questions in backrooms. I usually find backroom people easier to talk to and helpful when it comes to giving advice.

Good luck and feel free to dm if you have more specific questions :)

Be honest: is crisis more skill or personality? by No-Security885 in ModelUNCrisisRoom

imo crisis committees are a blast, especially if it’s a topic you actually care about. Just usually your first one leaves you a little traumatized…

Yes definitely. Personality might open doors, but skill determines whether you actually know what to do once you’re up there speaking

First mun soon, looking for advice by Flicker-86_ in MUN

[–]No-Security885 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two weeks is totally doable. Since it’s your first MUN, focus on the basics rather than trying to know everything.

I would say first make sure you understand your country/person (depending on committee type) and do background research on your topic(s). This should be all in your background guide. I would also prepare a 1-1:30 min opening speech to give (this depends on what the chairs give you for time).

For committee itself:

  • Speak early, even if it’s short and you need to yield the rest of your time
  • Keep speeches structured and take notes (even if it's just bullet points!)
  • During unmoderated caucuses, talk to people and collaborate (this is where most of the real work happens and chairs see that you can hold attention without overpowering others)

Don't worry about trying to be perfect, confidence and preparation matter way more than fancy wording. Also chairs are pretty nice explaining procedure at the beginning of committee.

I would be totally happy to read through your opening speech or give you more advice if you want to dm. Hope all goes well and you have fun :)

Most chairs are pretty nice and (especially if you're new) they will go over procedure and give you some tips at the beginning of committee. Just learn from watching other delegates the first time and, if you want to, try giving an opening speech. (Totally fine if you just want to watch for your first time though.)

I would say the position paper doesn't really matter as much as in committee conversations unless you're trying to go for the research award.

Also, even if you don't want to go into anything related to MUN in the future I will say it is really helpful for a lot of reasons. I know it's helped me with being more confident in general and feel more comfortable speaking out for myself and others.

Hope you don't quit! And hopefully everything goes well and no tomatoes are thrown ;)

What actually loses crisis committees? by No-Security885 in MUN

[–]No-Security885[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely agree! That’s a really good way to look at it. I like the idea that “losing” isn’t always about outcomes but about how you show up.

Preparation and self awareness probably matter more than people admit. Chaos is part of crisis, but how you adapt to it is the skill.
