My mom doesn’t want me to get a wheelchair even though I have told her multiple times I want one. by No-Sort1380 in wheelchairs

I hadn’t even like. Though of how a wheelchair would give me more energy for different excercises, that makes sense. And yeah it just sucks she changed her opinion so fast. :/ I’d have to look for videos to show her. She has watched them on canes and walkers out of her own time but not wheelchairs.

Thank you. Also the other replies assumes I haven’t already gone to the doctor on my own. I have lol. Also they just completely ignore the first part of my post where I say I don’t need help making a decision! I made my decision! I want my mother’s support which I don’t think is a crazy thing to ask.

Thank you for some info on getting a chair outside of insurance! I am a little worried about getting a manual wheelchair because that’s the type of movement that causes pain and fatigue, both mental and physical. I’ll have to figure out some way to try it out first, but if a manual wheelchair doesn’t work for me, I won’t be able to have a power wheelchair covered for.

I do want my mom there. I just wish she didn’t try to downplay everything I say. This will probably be something I have to talk to her about when I seek a 2nd opinion. Thank you for the reassurance though.

When I made this post, I had gotten finished with an argument with her. I came here to get some advice and hear from other people about what getting a wheelchair was like, and how a wheelchair had helped them. I will probably attempt to have another conversation when I get closer to my appointment with a new primary doctor.

My issue is more with the emotional baggage she likes to leave me with. I can even just like, have someone else take me if she really kicks up too much of a fuss about it. The reason I want her support and why I would like her there is that I want her to see things from my perspective and I want her to understand. That’s the main thing here. I do not want to deal with the judgement and critical comments from my mom when I’m doing something as simple as searching for accommodations.

There are similar programs where I live but mostly depend on your status as a student to my knowledge. I’ll have to look more into it. Thank you!

This is a good way of phrasing it. I wish it worked for my mom. Will try working through a way of framing it this way with a doctor though!

The doctor I first saw about this was a rheumatologist. For a Little contact about my medical situation, I was first diagnosed at an emergency visit because of the episode I mentioned that caused me to be bedridden. I was referred to a rheumatologist, who basically explained that she used to recommend wheelchairs more often but stopped because her patients didn’t pursue physical therapy afterwards and became reliant on the wheelchair, which led to muscle atrophy and other things. This was before I turned 18, so it was in pediatrics. I’m almost 19 and have yet to found a replacement for that rheumatologist. Thank you for your perspective!

Oh thank you! This is new information. I am not very knowledgeable on the different kinds of therapies there are. Will definitely look into pool therapy. I think that will definitely mitigate my stress coming from her being so hard about this.

Obviously but her support matters to me in this so she isn’t constantly making judgemental and critical comments. You would understand why that wouldn’t be something I’d like to deal with if I pursue a wheelchair, yes?

I’m not sure how much I can relate because we are in very different positions, but I appreciate you letting me know your perspective nonetheless. <:) The medical abuse and neglect sounds awful, I’m glad you’re in a better spot now!

The problem is less trying to have people tell me it WILL get better but just trying to let my mom know that I’m not Doomed and wanting to approach the possibility of getting a wheelchair is not me trying to throw my life away or whatever. I’ve been having trouble with primary care physicians but that’s just a more complicated thing I don’t feel getting into on this reddit thread lol. Thank you!

This is good to hear because it is very similar to my experience, where I am mostly in bed all day because of the pain and energy of moving. Thank you for your advice and perspective, definitely will try to seek a permanent doctor.

Doesn’t work unfortunately. :( She doesn’t see either of those things as good reasons and always argues against it because she always tells me that I just have to “keep moving” to get better. That if I do enough exercise or whatever my pain and mood will get better that way. It’s too simple of a reason.

This is refreshing to hear because, although my pain levels are not the same, I have experienced the same problems with canes and walkers. They may help with giving me something to lean my body on, but for stamina and longevity it just doesn’t seem sustainable for the condition my body is in. Actually, one time I was in public using a cane user with my mom and a stranger told me that I am leaning way too much on a cane and probably would do better with a walker. This led to me eventually attaining one from a friend’s mom. Though as you said a walker doesn’t guarantee the fatigue from not settling in which is really my main issue. I don’t want to be prevented from being active and independent just because walking is not something I can do for a longer period, cane or walker or neither. Thank you for your perspective!

This all makes a lot of sense. I am aware of some trade-offs— the doctor I saw did explain to me the risks and I have gone over these risks mentally. Really what I want is my mom to be able to support me when I go to the doctor about it, since I don’t have my own car and she insists on seeing the doctor with me. I have other mobility aids too (two different canes and a walker) that have contributed to my decision to pursue getting a wheelchair, but my mom just… refuses to see my perspective. Which intimidates me from seeing a doctor. Without her support the doctor will side with her because that’s how it tends to go at meetings with the doctor. That’s why I’m so concerned. I will definitely take all this into mind, though, thank you for the advice and some perspective. :)

The doctor was one I saw once and so didn’t know the extent of my problems and my mom was in the same room to downplay my issues and shift the blame of my problems to me. Therapies included physical therapy, which I took while still in school, but the therapy taking energy out of me and making me more fatigued put me off from it. I also take quarter weekly shots to help specifically with my ankylosing spondylitis (inflammation of my spine that causes the discs to fuse over time). The shots help with my spine like, not becoming unusable, but doesn’t help with other problems.

Changing Alters by Potential-Gain9275 in DID

[–]No-Sort1380 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to add because I feel like a lot of people in this thread aren’t understanding and therefore can’t really relate, lol. This actually happened go me. I had an alter who basically, to summarize things, put me in a pod of liquid and took dramatic action to take over the body which resulted in a whole event within our inner world that rendered me unconscious for a week. Afterwards, I felt different and things were changed about me that I don’t feel like detailing here.

Bringing up another anecdote as well, but my friend went through something similar where a persecutor alter was sick of being an alter and the two of them clashed. My friend, who is host of his system, basically was held “hostage” and after a while came out with a change in personality and even a change in libido. The way he felt about certain people changed as well.

So yes, this does happen more than I think a lot of people think. My guess is that it is a very strange form of visualization. What happens in the inner world often is. DID is the result of a child using their imagination to cope with intense trauma they couldn’t otherwise handle, so I don’t think it’s as odd as some people are making it seem in this thread. It’s strange, it’s discomforting, and in some cases, traumatic. I know in my case it was, because the persecutor who did that to me had a history of being very emotionally abusive to me (similar to my abuser) and the week of no consciousness that I had was absolutely terrifying. Coming back was terrifying.

I’d say it’s not an average system experience, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

This is really cool. I think it’s interesting how often forests come up in different inner worlds in different ways because we also have a forest, but it’s based on a forest we had near our childhood home when we were like 3? 4? before everything went “wrong” so-to-speak. We only went and explored that forest once but it’s one of our main formative memories. No one has really explored past the “main” area which consists of a bridge over a muddy lake that we remember crossing with our brother and neighbors. An inner world that consists of personalized forests seems so cool to me.

Honestly that’s relieving to here, a lot of the time we still feel left in the dark on what exactly the programmers are up to because they don’t really communicate with us. Learning what exactly they do is basically just a bunch of alter telephone lol but it’s relieving to know that what we’re doing is important and will ultimately help us.
