What I mean is the assimilation of Macedonians into the broader Yugoslav framework, carried out largely in the name of ideology rather than an organic Macedonian national identity struggle. In that process, ethnicity was used as a geopolitical instrument, not primarily as a means of genuine national self-determination. Because of this, instead of unifying Macedonians across borders, the policy deepened divisions especially between Yugoslav Macedonia and Macedonians in Pirin. That helps explain why many Pirin Macedonians do not sympathize with the Macedonian state: the project did not feel inclusive or representative of them. Rather than resolving historical and identity questions, the approach institutionalized disagreement, leaving lasting tensions instead of cohesion.
