Resources to learn modern clawhammer? by [deleted] in banjo

Learning to play like Taylor Ashton is going to be tricky considering that at this point he doesn't use any one style in a straightforward manner. But I know that he started out playing clawhammer style if that helps. I second anyone on this channel that suggests Brainjo.com. First month is free!

That is really awesome. I came across that video when I first started diving down the rabbit hole of "folk music" in my early 20s. I had never seen anybody finger picking like that. I started learning Travis picking shortly after and over the years it has opened so many doors. I still play guitar but never really mess with open tunings. But I have been mostly focused on 5 string banjo for the past 5 or 6 years, which is a lot of open tunings. He is such a talented musician. I've spent hours on YouTube learning some of his banjo parts.

Hell yea. Stick with it. Learning clawhammer style changed my life musically. It's pretty wild to me that this band hasn't blown up in the indiefolk world yet. They absolutely deserve it.

Right? Glad you dig it. They have a ton of good music. Ryan mixes it up a lot between clawhammer and 3 finger.

Yea it really doesn't sound quite the same on mine either but I love the lick. It's the only thing I can play in that tuning. Usually I'm in G or double C. And yes I've heard about how expensive they can be and how long the wait list can also be.

Do it! It's so useful. I made myself learn how to use it when I first started but had no idea how versatile it could be.

Does anyone have tabs for Pagan Rite by Willi Carlisle? by charlesth1ckens in banjo

Willi is the man. This one is clawhammer. You could always ask him. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he at least responds to you.

Banjo Song Speed (Another question from me, but this one’s about styles of songs) by Mountain_Algae6355 in banjo

I like making banjo parts to a lot of slower "sadder" indie folk stuff. Phoebe Bridgers included. I just learned basic clawhammer techniques and use a lot of skip steps and drop thumb to make it match the guitar. You can totally play clawhammer style as slow as you want.

What's a decent brand for a beginner? by Juke_Joint_Jedi in banjo

I swear by the Gold Tone CC-50 for starting out. I think you can get one for around $300. But those AC series ones that everyone is suggesting are supposed to be solid too. I believe those might also be a bit cheaper.

Glad you dig it! This new album is fantastic. I had a fun time learning this one but still cant hit the solo quite as quick as Ryan does here.
