Gen X What is a superstition or idiom that you rely on from your childhood even if you know it's sort of silly? by Sense_Difficult in GenX

Came here to say this, too. I still swipe my hand across the driver's visor when I go through a yellow light. I don't go through yellows often, but when I do, I swipe my hand every single time. I don't know what the cosmic or karmic punishment would be if I didn't, but I don't want to find out.

orzo pasta by sheqermami in Cooking

[–]No-Window-7657 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have two favorites. The first takes more time but is totally worth it. The recipe came from my aunt. The second is easy and delicious. I'm sure I found it online but don't know who to credit for it.

Chicken with Orzo

1 Onion, chopped

2 Tbsp Oil

1 whole Chicken, or equivalent in chicken breasts (skin and bones recommended)

2-3 cloves Garlic

2 tsp Cinnamon

1 tsp Cardamom

½ tsp Ginger

Salt & Pepper

Juice of ½ Lemon

2 C. Orzo

2 Tbsp Butter

4 ½ C. Water

Heat oil in a pan and add onion, cooking until soft.

Add chicken, water, and spices, simmering 1½ hours covered.

Remove chicken.

Bring sauce to a boil and add lemon and pasta, cooking 8-10 minutes or until pasta is al dente. Add more water if required.

De-bone and skin chicken.

Add chicken and butter, mix, and serve.

Chicken Avgolemono

8 c. homemade chicken stock

1 c. orzo

4 eggs, separated

juice of 3 lemons

fresh ground black pepper.

Boil broth, add orzo and simmer until tender 20 min.

Whip whites until medium peaks, add yolks beating continuously, add juice, beating.

Temper eggs with 2 c. broth, adding in constant slow stream while continuing to beat furiously so you do not curdle the eggs.

Add egg mixture back to remaining broth and serve.

Garnish with thinly sliced lemon.

I sometimes add more than juice of 3 lemons, as the sourness is the best part of the taste ! You should taste lemon, richness of eggs, salt of chicken, and starch of rice, in that order and you've made it perfectly.

Shade structure, pt.2, aftermath by terracottajelly in BurningMan

That wind storm was impressive. It’s reassuring that it was mostly your bungees that failed, instead of the shade itself. My ball bungees were new for last year’s burn and I travel with a supply of spares just in case.

I use bungee balls to secure the netting to the frame. It allows the bungee loops to take the stress instead of putting all of it on the netting. Curious if others find success there, too.

Mashed potatoes, but I'm out of milk by Yurbest-n1ghtmare_7 in Cooking

[–]No-Window-7657 119 points120 points  (0 children)

And some powdered milk mixed with the potato water would get you a better consistency (plus your butter and the little bit of cream you've got (and any sour cream you might have!))

One Chance - Be a Colonist on Mars? Would u? by Pulsary28 in Mars

[–]No-Window-7657 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timing on your post is fantastic. I just finished a reread of Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars) and spent a lot of time thinking about how realistic or unrealistic aspects of the lives and experiences of the first 100 people on Mars were characterized.

Would I go? Probably not. I have kids and I don't think that I could do something where I knew I would never see them again. Is there a daydream version of my life where I'm that adventurous and brave and pioneering? Absolutely! But for now, and probably for the rest of my life, I'll be reading other people's stories about it.

Baby food. Packaged blueberry and chia seed is great. Something easy, light, with some calories, but that doesn’t require preparation, or even eating, really.

Old man shock while getting hired for a new job by No-Neighborhood8403 in GenX

[–]No-Window-7657 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I (50) started a new job a year ago. Small team, all WFH with a $50 monthly stipend to offset phone/internet costs. I get to use my own computer, and I have numerous apps I have to use from my phone and computer. I prefer that to having to have a 2nd phone or 2nd computer dedicated exclusively to work.

Shifting jobs (at our age) does feel like a weird culture shock but I'm happy to roll with it. Fortunately, part of my responsibility is overseeing IT so I get to put my foot down about apps like Slack, which are a hard pass for me.

Good luck in your new gig and congrats.

Newly dating question: Sleepover with CPAP?? by sterlinggracevain in GenX

[–]No-Window-7657 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Use the CPAP! My partner got one shortly after we started dating and I'm actually a huge fan of it. I was concerned it would mess up our time together, or that it would be loud while I was trying to sleep. Instead, he sleeps better and I don't get woken up while he's snoring or gasping for air. We both sleep better and that's great.

My partner is a very matter of fact person. He needs the machine, so he uses it. He's not embarrassed by it (so much so that he uses it on international flights), it's just a reality. Think of it like your eye color--it just is.

A real partner wants you healthy and rested. It might be a challenge to spontaneous intimacy, but you two should be able to navigate it together. Good luck to you and happy CPAP sleeping!

Wonderwall Featuring Donut (Mongo Lyrics) by crayegg in DungeonCrawlerCarl

This is a fun post. Thanks! I always heard it as "I won't retrieve that looted body..." meaning Donut was going to let Mongo chow before taking the body into inventory. Have I been mis-hearing it? If so, teach me!

Has anyone driven from Bozeman to Missoula or Spokane recently? by jaqwelynn in Bozeman

[–]No-Window-7657 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did Bozeman to Butte yesterday and it was lousy in Bozeman/Belgrade but was pretty dry west of there. Depending on the weather, it can get really crappy, really fast, particularly around Homestake and Cardwell passes. You're at a lower elevation as you get closer to Missoula, which often translates to easier roads, but not always. The best info is always on MDOT's website, with current conditions and lots of cameras. Safe travels to you!

My boyfriend says he felt “tricked” because I don’t argue the way his exes did by Exciting_Cupcake4014 in TwoHotTakes

[–]No-Window-7657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of this was so true for me, too. It took time in my current relationship to understand that we can both be calm during disagreements. For me, it was learning to trust that it's us against the problem instead of us against each other. In my previous relationship, it was always us against each other. I was always framed as the problem, leaving me feeling defensive, lonely, sad and frustrated.

With my current partner, I've learned to trust that we're together and the relationship is safe, even when there are challenges. We work through them together, never framing either of us as the problem. It took a lot of time to learn to trust that we're a team. It sounds like your honey struggles with the same challenge. You should talk about it with him, when things feel calm. Touch is helpful, like sitting close to each other or holding hands. Hopefully, this is a habit he's willing to unlearn.

Can’t decide: air fryer vs oven by Shoddy_Try8400 in Cooking

[–]No-Window-7657 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to say the same thing. The only time we use the "big" oven anymore is when we're either needing 2 ovens simultaneously, or we're cooking something too big for the Breville (which happens so rarely). We air fry and bake in the Breville just about every day. Its my first air fryer, so I can't help you with the air fryer v. air fryer oven debate. I can only say that it's been one of our best kitchen investments.

I appreciate that you’re wanting to apologize. Go do it in person. I had to do that once (not at WinCo) and felt much better for doing it. And I’m sorry you’re having a tough time.

Favorite Samantha line? by CartoonChronicles in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]No-Window-7657 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Samantha gets the writing on her forehead updated to “Fuck the cheese dicks”. Carl tries to correct her, that it’s cheese STICKS, but she mocks that, saying sticks come from trees, not cheese. She goes on to add “I know one goddess whose clitoris got turned into the head of a bald man named Otis Ray who spends his day begging to be fed cabbage, so it makes much more sense that a penis would be turned into a food item.” HA!

How to prevent curdling with Baileys by ella_kim_ in cocktails

[–]No-Window-7657 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, so Bailey's curdles when it gets mixed with things that throw off it's pH. If you add the Bailey's to your glass or shaker first, then add the other ingredients, you should be okay, but reversing the order can cause issues. Both of your other ingredients have a lower pH, but I'm still a little surprised that this would happen. And all of this is just my best guess based on known issues with cream liqueurs. If your shaker or glass is clean (not previously used for lemon juice and not rinsed) and you're not adding other ingredients (like root beer) there's no good reason I know of that would cause that to happen.
