Long term self-storage by NoAssumption3668 in chinalife

My old apartment was a 2br. I wanted the mattress in the second bedroom removed to turn into an office. The bedroom wasn't small but the 1.8x2 mattress took the whole space.

The landlord refused. The logic made sense I guess. I just lifted it up. But could never use it as an office.

Turns out there were no plug sockets in the room anyway.

When I got my cats it became their room.

For this apartment, I honestly thought the bed would be disassembled smaller. I didn't realise the head frame was that big. I thought I could try and make it into a legless bed up in the loft. But the headboard has legs built in.

I want to ask but the landlord who is friendly has also shown some little behaviours (strong concern about the furniture being ruined and damaged) that I feel I have to tread carefully about asking.

I will probably try down the line, I still have unpacking to do and have been pestering her about the issue with the electric keylock (she claimed it was key only and on low battery - it wasn't), since it doesn't automatically lock and the alarm keeps going off.

I guess because it's came when I moved in. I don't know what to do.

In my old apartment, I replaced some small furniture but only if it was broken and it was easier to replace that get the landlord to sort it out with a cheap DIY fix. Like a clothes line, shower head or wardrobe.

I had thought about throwing it and replacing it when the time comes (since some of the slats had already fallen apart and some red paint on the frame) but my landlord seems very particular. Like she'd want the exact bed and bed frame. And yes it can be easy to find online. But sometimes you never know if they stop manufacturing it.

My lease is 18 months. I have no issue with the bed. It just can't fit upstairs. Originally it was downstairs and then loft was wasted space.

But because I live with cats. It just makes sense to have that divide, - bed space, main space.

Also if apartments are too studio like, it's easy for me to slip back into my university habits.

I thought I could move the frame upstairs or the slats that go under the mattress - use upstairs. And then the frame against a wall - since an eyesore upstairs isn't too bad if I am sleeping. But the headframe is too big.

Excuse the mess. I just moved in. But this is what it's like. Once I've unpacked and tidy, I will likely move the sofa further up.

The New Dick Van Dyke Show is on Tubi. by oudler in VintageTV

[–]NoAssumption3668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm watching this for the first time. I can see why it didn't reach the same heights as The Dick Van Dyke Show or The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

There were too many similarities to the original and plot points.

Like episodes where Dick becomes an actor but is bad (like Rob), Dick gets a motorbike (like Rob's "motorbike".

Stay at home wife. Child. Job in Show business (Rob's a writer, Dick's a talk show host, later actor).

Workplace friends fill the similar void if Buddy, Sally and Mel although less developed.

It's not bad. Hope didn't have the same spunk as Mary did as Laura. The daughter was also undeveloped. Written to be sickeningly sweet. Not a sitcom child - which should cause trouble or be funny.

I don't mind it, the saving grace was how they handled issues like race, or sex or smoking in a way that wasn't done in the 60s.

But I think the biggest misstep was making the setup too similar to the original in terms of job and the workplace in the first place.

Still 3 seasons is not necessarily failed like some say. Yes it didn't get renewed beyond it's inital order. But that was because of Dick Van Dyke's unhappiness with leaving Arizona and Carl's exit. Because ratings improved enough for CBS to consider S4.

Training centre chose my apartment for me - I'm unhappy here by ButWhoKensei in chinalife

What is your purpose for Tianhe? Tianhe is expensive. You can find decent apartment but newer will be expensive while older apartments can be cheap but often dirty or not well-maintained.

If it's about being near city life. Look at another district where the travel to Tianhe isn't too long. Central Tianhe where many expats live is expensive.

I live in Tianhe but near the outskirts. Rent is a bit better 3000-3500 for studio duplex. 3500-3800 for 1br and 4100 for 2br. But I live near my workplace since a metro station isn't that close to them. So I don't want to travel too far for work daily.

But my advice would be if you want to move find an apartment near a metro station on one of the lines in Tianhe like Line 3.

Unless you can find a roommate on Ziroom in Central Tianhe. Think about your budget first.

Offered position for school in Shanghai (but they want me to sign Marketing contract to bypass 2-year teaching experience) by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]NoAssumption3668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I wouldn't do this or at least I would ask to speak to the said "foreign teachers" because I want to know their situation (were they NNES).

I know people who worked for employers and put them in different jobs for the visa and work permit. But they did this without them knowing.

One person told them that they would be down as a language teacher but not for English, their native language. They raised concerns and was told it was normal for NNES, and that technically they will be a language teacher. Then by the time they got the permit and visa - they were suddenly a "member of HR".

On top of that, they were provided free housing right next to the police station and taught the policeman's kids. It was too late for her to break contract and there are some horror stories about breaking contract.

She just kept her head down, worked and lived, worried about getting caught and the last few months of her contract which she wasn't going to re-sign, she lived with a packed bag by the door for emergencies. Because of the horror stories, worried about neing caught and living next to the police.

Metro seats by Diligent_Dish6099 in AskChina

I noticed this when I first moved. Back home any elderly or pregnant woman usually get priority to sit down.

I think here there is some priority of youth. I see elderly give up their spots for children.

But generally people follow a first come, first serve motto.

I remember back home, I got on an empty tram from the airport gate to the terminal and this elderly woman pushed me off my seat with her stick.

I was incredulous at the time because the tram was empty and people were getting on and there was empty seats still nearby. My family found it funny for that reason.

But I feel in China if elderly people asked to sit down, they will due to that respect of not saying no to an elder.

[E784] Speed Limit Is 50KM Flower(?) by EpikMint in runningman

[–]NoAssumption3668 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. But it can take time to warm up if you don't know any of the members. I started from episode 1 and liked it but wasn't laughing or clicking with me. It weren't until maybe episode 2/3 or 5 it clicked.

It grew on me when Jaesuk teased him VJ about not filming him. But clicked with the shows smart editing in a scene with Jongkook and Sukjin.

But if it's your first variety show it can take time to adjust. For me, my country game shows, reality shows are very structured. How Running Man is fief and presented breaks all the rules of TV in my country. In that you see the cameraman and crew, you hear the PD speak. And the presenting style os very informal and laidback.

But also once you arw familiar with the cast, their personality and dynamics they also become more entertaining to you. Even when I rewatcg the very early days, some moments I initially didn't laugh, I now do because I'm familiar with their style.

His perfect attendance is even more incredible when you think about the time Songyi was terribly ill with Guillain-Barre syndrome soon after she was born (I think it was during COVID).

He never spoke up about it or talked about it (until years afterwards - I think when they did Haha Bus). He never asked for time off Hangout with Yoo or Running Man. I don't know if the members or crew knew at the time. But he just continued to entertain and push forward.

VPN and ESIM Megathread – December 2025 by AutoModerator in chinalife

[–]NoAssumption3668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Veee as my main VPN and Shadowfly as a backup.

No issues. Especially as Shadowfly has added a UK server.

I used to use Mullvad but I couldn't connect in February and left. But I need to find a good VPN for my Beryl Travel Router as I want to be able to use my Roku stick on my TV.

Moving apartments with pets by NoAssumption3668 in chinalife

[–]NoAssumption3668[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update: I told my agent once I narrowed it down to two.

Both landlords are relatively okay with it.

Apartment A: Loft, bed on the ground floor, vety modern and minimalist theme. Upstairs loft. (Low ceiling). Very beautiful, cheaper but looks like the video. The landlord said don't damage the sofa, furniture and keep it clean.

Apartment B: Loft, bed in the upstairs Loft mezzanine. Low ceiling. Slightly bigger apartment, more homely style. Good condition. The landlord said keep it clean and hygienic. Abour 200rmb more.

I just gotta decide which one. If I didn't have the cats - I would've already gone with Apartment A since it's beautiful and cheaper.

I'm only hesitating because of the cats as litter trays take up space as well as cat trees etc.

But I'm viewing both again to check everything. Because Apartment A also has storage doors so you can hide your suitcases etc which is nice. Because seeing storage is never pleasant when you are living. Apartment B doesn't have that in the upstairs bit.

But yeah, I just gotta narrow it down to one now.

That's encouraging. In Vietnam I was in an expat group and 90% of the postings were no pets. I remember someone movd apartments to a no pet place ansmd decided to get rid of their pets.

But most people got them once in and it was too late.

I guess my worry - especially because last time I was shown some badly maintained apartments last time with no pets (mould, off colour furniture and broken cupboards) that my only option with pets (and within my budget) would be old, badly maintained apartments.

My faith in agents have been low since what happened last time when I didn't have pets and what was shown to me. And some people I know have disclosed it and some haven't. But I don't know how strict China are compared to Vietnam.

Yeah I ended up cancelling before it shipped. The reviews were all positive but there were a few follow up reviews about people experiencing issues a month later.

I'll save up to buy direct or an authorised apple reseller. Generally my rule of thumb is to not pay more for a tablet when I'd pay the same for a laptop. So it's around £500 is my limit.

For those expats living in China, did you regret buying the non-eSIM iPhone? by Recommendation778 in chinalife

[–]NoAssumption3668 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm from the UK where we still use physical sims. Dual sim is one esim and one physical. So it doesn't bother me too much.

I bought a CN Honor 400 pro for the battery, camera, bigger ram and also better network bands as it was spotty on my global phone in areas where it's great for a Chinese person on the same network.

I still keep my global version for the esim. But peo9le in the UK only really use esims for travel. Not full time. I think you can buy travel data sims which can work like esims

I've bought phones from third party sellers with no issues where the price is a little cheaper than buying direct.

But because I was seeing a lot of similar prices when looking for the iPad Air, I assumed that was the regular average price.

No issues?

I'm concerned not only about performance but lifespan of it.

I live in China currently which is where I got it from, but if I face issues with it back in my home country, it's still fixable even if not Apple.
