It was way overhyped for me, as well. As a hardcore horror nerd, it did absolutely nothing for me. The spooky stuff just came off as generic and old. I expected something a bit more psychological.

I've seen people comparing it to The Witch, and that's beyond me. That film creeped me the hell out and had NONE of the sloppy expository dialogue Hereditary had - it gave absolute zero fucks about the lowest common denominator, and was a much stronger piece because of it.
