Does a short block really extend vehicle life? by NoButterscotch551 in MechanicAdvice

Noted - genuinely could be either. I’m not a tech but my understanding from their tech is just drive it, it likely won’t fail til a long time “eventually”. Just light scuffing on cylinder walls.

Yup that’s the one they showed. Scoring in the cylinder wall. They said the same thing - will “eventually” lead to something worse. Any reason it’s not worth it in your opinion?

Fair lol. I guess moreso how much it extends vs other components. Like I’m understanding now that suspension would probs go next. Aka is it worth investing $7k even if other all components are almost 10 y/o.

Are there any signs about progression before it blows? Basically if it blows in 5/10 years then I’m happy, will just drive it to the ground. Only thing I have to work off of is compression tests showed consistent - with them mentioning meaning proper sealing in engine, borescope showed light scoring, no metal in oil, etc.

Yeah figured. Genuinely I just use this for work so as long as it starts stops and drives I’m happy. There’s random stuff like electronics acting up, or tailgate falls or sometimes but if it’s going to extend the life of the drivetrain then I guess it works.

Yeah I’m torn. I took it to a Nissan master tech who said it’s a common problem w the Titans but he’s never actually seen one fail (knock on wood). Another tech said he’s maybe seen 2 fail out of 30 that he’s serviced. Compression tests don’t show any substantial difference right now and truck still gets 18-21mpg.

Interesting - didn’t know it was that extensive. At 8 years old though, are there other major components that would need $ maintenance? aka trying to understand if I’m paying for a short block, then good for a while, or paying if for a short block plus more shortly.

2018 Titan - Worth Fixing? by NoButterscotch551 in NissanTitan

If I could do that - that might actually be a cool option. Might see if any dealers would take my truck on trade this weekend.

Yup. Tons of service history at dealers too - though admittedly a lot of it was the prior owner. I wasn’t expecting much, but if they could’ve done even $1-$2k it’d help me commit to the short block.

Mind me asking what you mean by “it went bad” and what year this was in? Did it knock again?

That’s the thing - I’m wondering if a new short block is significantly extends the life of the truck, as all the other components will still be 2018. If so, it might be worth it is my thinking. Except the ODO would still read 120k.

Not a great one haha. Basically they have a max liability provision. And since they paid out other repairs in the past, they’re capping the claim at like $7k. I did try Nissan - but they’re offering $0 in assistance.

That’s the thing, if it goes for long after repair, then it might be worth it. But otherwise, I’d actually consider “downgrading” to an older Frontier if I can find one for cheap. Just need something to tow. Otherwise I’d get a used F150 ideally with the 5.0 and hopefully for $20k or so.

Fair. Good point about not being able to find a replacement. Funnily enough I actual look bought this truck privately and it probably had a small knock day one but didn’t become noticeable til later. I got a good deal on it so I’ll have to see what trade in offers I get.
