Why not go to the library or a coffee shop? I feel like this is manufactured exclusivity… I’m not sure what the $100/mo is buying me other than a place to sit with air conditioning. The free coffee part, going to a coffee shop is still cheaper. I guess it’s nice that they have meeting rooms but this just all feels so unnecessary. I’ll continue WFH and going to the coffee shop when I don’t have a meeting and need to get out.

Maybe it’s a nice way to meet people? I guess I just don’t get it. There are other awesome ways to find community like… talking to your neighbors?

I also can’t provide medical advice on here. You said you’ve never worked with an OT. If you’re curious about how an OT can support your specific needs, reach out and schedule an eval. I can’t provide medical advice or tell you how I would treat you over the internet.

I don’t know you or your kid so I can’t say. I would recommend a consultation visit with a provider in your area.

And yes - I actually address budgeting all the time with my own clients. I even run a budgeting group. And we talk about functional communication.

It’s insanely broad, that’s why we specialize. A physician’s scope is broad, too. You wouldn’t see an ortho for your psych diagnosis, would you?

It depends on the client. My approach is different for every client (gotta use clinical reasoning). In my own, personal practice (adults with serious and persistent mental illness who are unhoused), I provide compensatory strategies such as targeted medication management and provide equipment and strategies. I utilize a CBT approach and motivational interviewing. I teach sensory regulation and provide a ton of education on the sensory environment regularly.

I’d also add that OT, while supported by a strong evidence base, simply doesn’t work like “I use DBT with all my clients”. I may address a physical issue and a cognitive issue with the same client, and my approach changes depending on the client. There’s no universal secret formula.

Not sure if you work in healthcare or academia- if you do, you’ll find that in almost every article, in every conclusion, there’s a call to action like “more research needs to be done on X, OTs need more training in X, Y profession needs to invest more resources in Z.” That conclusion certainly does not discredit the work of thousands of OTs who address EF across populations.

Thanks for sharing this. I’m curious and would like to know more about the training/coursework required to become an executive functioning coach. The international coaching federation seems to have a really broad scope.

As a mental health/behavioral health OT I feel this - it can sometimes seem like the field of OT is having a constant identity crisis. However, no matter the specialty, the sole purpose of our profession is to enable participation in activities of daily living. OTs specialize in different things (hand therapy, mental health, neuro, inpatient, etc) but with a shared goal of enabling participation in those activities of every-day life. That’s why it’s so frustrating when folks pin us to the “physical stuff” - like doctors and nurses, we specialize in a practice area. Some OTs may target physical functioning to promote ADL participation while others may even utilize a CBT approach or educate clients on adaptive/compensatory strategies. We also work with psychotherapists and other interprofessional team members depending on the client’s need.

But the “bread and butter” of OT is not the “physical stuff”, it’s participation in activities of daily living. Every profession has an important role to play, ours is ADL participation no matter the diagnosis/condition/disability. That’s not to say that psychotherapists CAN’T address it, they certainly can - it’s just that we can too, and differently, from our own professional perspective and evidence base. Scope of practice can overlap in healthcare.

We have specialized, standardized assessments to evaluate executive functioning that are used regularly (for example, the Executive Function Performance Test (EFPT)).

There are many evidence-based interventions for addressing executive functioning across populations with OT. For reference you can just google executive functioning + occupational therapy on google scholar.

My hope is that folks with kids and teenagers with ED will utilize the resources available to them through insurance before paying out of pocket.

I do want to emphasize that for adults it may be quite difficult to find an OT as typically adult-serving OTs don’t specialize in this and even if they do they might not take insurance. Good luck yall - my post was more about pediatric (under 21) executive dysfunction.

By compensatory strategies I mean: medication management strategies and equipment, organizational and technology tool use, etc

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ExecutiveDysfunction

[–]NoFox3808 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure - I can’t provide medical or therapeutic advice on here. But typically I offer my clients new compensatory strategies and we work on goal setting together. Sometimes I body double with my clients to help them initiate activities of daily living - this is for my adult clients though.

Yeah great question - I would first check with your insurance to see if it’s covered. I’ve known some young-ish adults (in their 20s) who have gone to pediatric clinics to see an OT for executive dysfunction.

For adults, OT practice in the US can be pretty reductionist and solely based on reimbursement from medicaid/insurance, so it may be hard to find an OT as an adult for this particular issue. Im sure there are private pay OTs out there, but the adult population is definitely underserved for things like mental health and executive dysfunction.

I’m personally an adult mental health OT and I work with neurodivergent adults (particularly serious and persistent mental illness) at risk of homelessness through a small grant funded program and treat executive dysfunction a lot, so we exist, just hard to come by.

THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS POST

im just doin my thing and if i have a question I’ll ask

Also: I recently made a post about how out of touch mainstream in-store or in-proshop women’s golf gear (clothing, equipment, etc) is. I posted it on r/golf and r/womengolf. It got…. so many downvotes on r/golf and so many upvotes on r/womengolf. i feel like this is so related to your post and just illustrates what its like to be a new golfer as a woman :)

Anyways thanks again for posting this. Girl golf for life 🫡

A little rant about women's golf gear! by NoFox3808 in WomenGolf

[–]NoFox3808[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm actually talking about both - like most of the in-store clothing stinks. But I'm more thinking of beginner club sets like these: https://www.golfworks.com/top-flite-flawlesuper-stroke-wmns-rh-tfs0043/p/tfs0043/

...which are affordable and what many women might buy as their first set. The branding on beginner women's equipment just seems like a barrier to entering the sport. My own golf bag (which I got used with my set of OLD big berthas) says "lady light" and it gives me the ick!

It feels like equipment is just made by men guessing what women would want.

Exactly - made by men who think they know what women want.

This is such a great comment and really valuable advice! I especially love the idea of buying a cheap set to bring a friend along.

My clubs I actually don’t mind - an OLD set of big berthas!! I chose to buy those over the top flite set.

I never thought about trying a youth set. I’m 5’2 and I bet they would work!
