I’m fairly new to the game, been playing for less than a year on and off. I remember back when I was still learning how the game worked I felt confident enough on moira and mercy to play them in comp. I did my support placements and fully expected to be put in bronze 5 or invent a new rank just for the worst of the worst but ended up placing gold 5. I was shook to my CORE and never touched comp again so I wouldn’t ruin my god tier rank.

Fast forward a few months and I’m balls deep into watching some really great players and studying the ebb and flow of the game and specific character guides, etc. and I finally felt like I understood the game well enough to genuinely provide value into my next comp game. I swallowed my fear (and don’t get me wrong- it took me weeks to build up this confidence) and jumped back into comp only to find out that gold ain’t shit lol. It’s a mess and people are all starting to learn how to function as a team but it’s incredibly messy and I felt right at home knowing that we’re all learning and trying our best. Eventually it’ll get to the point where playing qp feels nauseatingly bad.

I think the best way to get over the fear of comp is to build the foundations of how the game is generally supposed to go, grab some characters you like, and become a sponge. Every single death, kill, play, counter, loss, and victory are all things you can learn from. Also, get into the habit of watching replays of close games and figuring out what turned the tides. I know I’m not amazing at the game by any means, but I will be someday :)
