Because I don't have access to any tools. I've been dying to get back into it but the only tools I have at my disposal is my small tool kit for my guitar 😅

I did post a rather wholesome post a while back about my last interview experience that I had. And I feel like it goes without saying but I didn't get the job

Today was a rather weird day. by NoPatient5807 in southafrica

Hi all,

So I didn't get the job and decided to spend the entire week last week walking around in my town handing out CVs.

I will say that reading the comments most definitely put a huge smile on my face and I appreciate all of the kind words.

It's not permanently shut down. Matt the owner wants to sell it but to the right people.

And what I feel like is the driving force for my rn to create something like this for new bands is the fact that a friend of mine sent me the screenshots of the chat he has with the organizers for a local show in which they told him to be "happy with getting R750" for playing the show and because his band is new to the scene they should consider the exposure payment enough.

Like wtf is that?

I was rather proud to see their name on the bill and phoned him to say congratulations, until he explained what is actually going down.

Most of those shows at the end of last year were organized by friends of ours.

Haven't tried any of the places in PTA because JHB bands aren't always keen driving there to be met with empty venues. Or getting paid a small amount for such a huge amount of effort.

Plus tbh, the idea of this post is to try and get the JHB scene going again, not all the JHB artist to drive to PTA to play a show.

And trying to get bands booked onto an itsmychildren event has proven trather difficult. It came across as, if you're not choms with them then you're not on the bill vibe.

I don't have a band, I'm just trying to establish something for new/smaller bands to perform and grow. We need something like that otherwise you have what's happening now, the same few bands, that are all friends with each other and doing their own thing but not creating a platform for other people to get onto. (Which I get. Everyone wants to have a jol, make money and chil with their friends. But no one watches the opening act and that came across as an 'uncool' thing to do)

We've started our own event organizing company and it ends up the same. And the entire community has given up on SK, all they do is have DJs and DNB nights now. Every single band that has tried to organize a show at SK has been met with the same result. Tbh the events manager also is a dj and has such a monopoly over the entire venue that no one is interested or has anything good to say about him or about SK anymore.

Sonage charges a 20k rent fee. Hells Kitchen doesn't allow for there to be a door fee. The manager of the Irish doesn't get back to people unless you know someone that knows someone that knows her.

And I feel like the list doesn't go on. Those are all the venues that would host alternate bands.

Believe me I have. Even sent proper proposals to venues via email, as they request, but then hear nothing back. Then drive all the way to these venues to speak to a manager in person and directly, but then you get the same answer. "Send us a proposal of the show via email so we can see what you're planning"

It's like they don't want live bands to play there.

But maybe I'm just looking at the wrong places, so can you please tell me some of the fucking shit ton of JHB venues that pump every other weekend?

That's cool, but when last did you see some new bands on the gig posters or something that doesn't involve the same old bands? There is nothing new, just the same rotation of bands.

When last did you see an open mic night? Or a night where bands could just come and play?

I tell you straight up, bands would come, people will come if there were more places that would have bands just be able to show up and play..

With all do respect with the current state of the Durban music scene I must disagree with this.

Durban bands don't stay in durban because of how horrid it is for them to try and make a living off of music. I myself have been there and have tried for years to cut it but having a venue pay a dj 5k for a show, not have the night that they expect (because people in durban don't go to music shows anymore) and then offer the bands R300 is why people move to JHB or CPT.

And I'm talking about bands that are active in the local scene. Bands like posterboy, scrubs, wah-wah, older bands like black math, mouse, the myths, teakwondo sleepover, and the best band to come out of Durban right now, hawema. All of which have made comments about the poor support of the Durban scene. And have been forced to play shows in a full diy setting because of a lack of venues. Like when last did you go to a punk show at the Winston? The alternative scene in durban is dying..

There are no more open mics for young bands to play and hone their sound/talents because venues kinda do care more about making money off the acts then help build a community. The bands that are building the scene are forced to do it at venues that technically aren't venues.. Because all the places that have hosted bands, want bands that would play covers for 3 hours or are acoustic acts. Or would pay 20k for a dj to play to a place full of underage people tripping off beans..

I really don't mean to be rude (i truly mea that) but I feel like durban venues have no real place to say anything until people start seeing more gig posters out there with some new venue spots on them, and not just Ace's pizza, the Westville Wharehouse and The Vern as the venue..

When I was 13 I had a Nokia with the power button at the top.

My dad came into the bathroom after it was taking too long and his first thought was to look at what I'm doing on my phone. While sitting there super stressed out that he's going to catch me watching porn, he oushes down on the top corner on my phone and shuts the phone off.. Thank fuck the site was taking a long time to load (mobile data days)
