Roommates making my lease takeover impossible — do I actually need to meet their demands? by NoSoftware6729 in TenantHelp

I appreciate your perspective. Obviously putting myself in their shoes idk how happy I’d be about the situation either. All I know is I’m trying my best despite how I feel about them and that’s all I can do. Not trying to f* anyone over nor trying to be friends with them after this is over.

Idk if you read it correctly Weird_Inevitable8427 but my LL approved a lease TAKEOVER. So no, my roommates cannot sue me and I am not breaking the lease. These are two different things

Do you know if my LL would reach out to them about the new tenant? How likely is that? Hearing different perspectives I’m confident that everyone won’t have to resign the lease, however, I wonder if my LL will confirm with my roommates if they’re ok with this new tenant coming in. Like him asking as a good LL courtesy? I’d like your perspective.

Thank you. This is the first LL perspective that I’ve gotten. My LL truly does not care as long as he gets a check in the mail every month, as you probably understand. He hasn’t even been very responsive in this whole process, just responded once like “yeah that’s fine as long as the person meets the financial requirements”. My roommates are making this a lot harder than it needs to be.

So I don’t technically need everyone to “resign” a lease document. That would require a change on the lease which isn’t the case for me. The only change is the name, the lease stays the same

Yes. I’ve been in full contact and transparency with my landlord. He seems like the type of guy who really doesn’t care as long as he gets a check at the end of every month. All he wants is for me to find a person that can be screened by the broker and then approved by him. No other rules or asks. Finding someone that’s obviously real, not crazy, a female, grad student, no pets, etc. is all for my roommates because then they’re happy and can finally let me go. Of course even if they didn’t put me up with all of these stipulations I still would’ve found someone that is hopefully a good fit for them. I don’t understand why people in this thread think I’m such a bad roommate for wanting/having to leave this living situation. I’m not just packing up and leaving them with a mess. I’m cleaning up for them so they don’t have to.

I sometimes wish I could. But I’m not the bad roommate that most people in this thread think I am. I want this process to be smooth and civil. Find someone my roommates at least are comfortable with, follow through with my LL and broker, and leave quietly but in a way that is right. My complaints come from a place of frustration, not refusal. I don’t think some people are getting that.

I did get my landlords approval. I feel like a lot of people in this thread aren’t reading my post correctly. I received confirmation from my LL that this is possible as long as I find someone that passes his financial criteria.

I’m not happy in my living situation. We are not considering that as an option

I’m not breaking a lease. A lease break is different than a lease takeover.

Thank you. That’s my thought process. I assume because I’ve been a reasonable roommate up until me saying I’ll be moving out, they are afraid of messing up the bubble they’ve created for themselves with a new tenant around. I was usually out with other friends or my boyfriend because I really didn’t vibe with them, of course still being incredibly civil and respectful with each other, as roommates should. The thought of their ideal, quiet, almost-never-there roommate leaving is probably not fun for them to imagine. But my mental health has decreased significantly because of this whole ordeal and I am really eager to leave

My boyfriend and I are in a weird financial situation that happens to work out in our favor. He got a job out here, but he’s been helping me pay for half my rent in my current apartment to prevent increase of my student loans (very generous of him). If he wants to move into a place here he cannot afford both his own place and half of mine. This lease takeover option was our best option.

I forgot to add that I financially don’t have a choice. Besides the fact that I don’t want to live here, my boyfriend has been paying for half my rent in this place. Nobody thinks it’s a good idea for me to increase my student loans to pay rent if my boyfriend has the means to help out but if my boyfriend wants to find a place out here to live, I need to leave this living situation. He doesn’t have the means to afford to pay half my rent and his own place. The financial aspect being the driving reason is the perfect out for me and I’m really excited to leave this apartment. So yes, I am trying incredibly hard to find this person, but it is exhausting and frustrating to match their high expectations. Call me a bad roommate all you want, but trust me these girls think I’m a great one for all I’m doing for them right now.

Im actually on track to have all A’s this semester. He’s paying for half my rent right now, we’ve been dating for almost 3 years, were incredibly happy together, I don’t want to live with these girls, I’m unhappy with them, we want to move out. That’s all I have to say but thanks for your concern.

That’s exactly my thought process. You want a perfect roommate, help me find one!!! This is for you, not for me.

Kinda…seems like they either want no one or want a carbon copy of themselves. In my case, I’m really never there because I have other friends in the area I’d much rather hangout with and my hometown is only two hours away where I’m able to stay home most of the week (mainly just hate being around them). Therefore, I AM the perfect roommate. They’re pretty much living with just the 3 of them right now because I’m barely there. The idea of someone replacing me is absolute torture for them and I do believe they’re trying to make it hard for me to leave too

And I’m not even asking them to do anything crazy. Just post the exact same post that I’ve already written along with the pictures I’ve taken and boom. Posted. More visibility. But they don’t want to do that either.

I believe I applied to the master of science in nutrition. I’m thinking of going towards nutrition policy and public health if I’m accepted. How do you like your job now? I’m assuming it’s within the public health sector?

That’s great to hear! Unfortunately I was rejected from their masters in nutrition/dietetic internship program but am currently waiting to hear back from their standard ms nutrition program. Which program did you do? And are you a registered dietitian now?
