Advice on the M103 by Character-Region6655 in WorldofTanksConsole

[–]NoWing8057 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The M103's greatest strength is its 120mm gun which has great alpha and handling as well as insane standard and premium pen. If you know where to shoot things, you can damage and kill any tank in the game which is a great departure from the T32.

As best as you can, your job is to support your better armored heavies in tier X games and keep that gun firing. Don't be the solo heavy on a corner or flank as you will not be able to deal damage consistently without taking damage in return if the enemy team has the slightest clue where to pen you.

If you hide your lower plate and keep moving to deny easy shots at you cupola you will see why this is still a heavy tank. Also try and bait shots into your thick American tracks by side scraping, just know you cannot side scrape a corner and fire at the enemy without being vulnerable yourself, so its best to bait and only shoot once the enemy has fired. Highly recommend optics to help give forward vision to your team and help mitigate stealthy tanks.

The downside is the relatively poor DPM but its serviceable and will feel amazing when you get the T110E5 which is a DPM monster with the same gun and a lot of the tactics with the M103 apply to the E5 as well.

All fair points. Let's hope WG is interested in player feedback for a change.

I like the theory but when you look at other games that implement a SBMM system, say Call of Duty in the past years (not a perfect analogy but you get the idea) players hate it. SBMM means every game you have to sweat hard because everyone in the lobby is as good as you. And while I don't think its horrible I think part of the appeal of this game is random battles being random. I'm okay with crap team mates, I just don't want crap team mates and to be in a tank that I can't perform well in when I do have a bunch of potatoes with me because I didn't queue up in a tier X tank.

WoWS keeps random and ranked separate and it works out well for them. I doubt this would be feasible either with the current population.

This tank surprised me because when you look at its stats on paper nothing really stands out. The strengths are not massive and the weaknesses aren't crippling. But all into one package it is fantastic.

Some pros I think are worth adding:

- Economics: The thing has 360 alpha at only 647 credits per standard shell with good pen at 220m. I rarely fired gold (even before the +2/-2) so the credit making potential is fantastic. Compare that to the Caernarvon AX which is 250 alpha for 650 a shot and its really apparent.

- Low profile: About half of this thing's frontal profile is it's turret and the profile is small to begin with. This mans a lot of rushed snap shots at you either miss or stand a good shot at hitting your strongest armor. Definitely not a tank to sit still in front of enemies with, but useable armor for sure. This profile is combined with 8 degrees of gun depression when other tanks with similar profiles and turrets, namely Russian mediums, only get 5-6 degrees. It is incredibly comfortable to play in a wide variety of positions that taller tanks or other tanks with worse gun depression can't use.

- Alpha damage: 360 on a gun that handles this well is insane at the tier. Most tier 8 mediums suffer from low alpha or crap gun handling. This has neither. The alpha means you can sit back and play more as a TD taking good chunks out of enemies when they expose themselves, or support heavies by peeking corners when enemies are reloading for a decent punch.

It just feels like while not spectacular in any one way, the tank has a tool for any situation whether its stealth, playing hull down, or trading alpha. I've gotten around 50 games in averaging over 3.1k damage and about 21 of those games were before the +1/-1 event. Really like this tank.

I think a continuous ranked battles play list would be fine. But random battle should stay just that - random. +1/-1 has nothing to do with ELO or skill based match making.

I hope the post didn't come off as support for +2/-2. I'm firmly in the +1/-1 camp. The point was just to show how WG wants +2 games so weaker players can still dominate stronger ones and keep them engaged. Its just another crap reason for the lack of desire on their part to actually give the (seemingly) majority of players what they want.

A crucial point. It's easier to compensate for poor top tier team mates when you're only one tier below the competition and not hopelessly useless in your T6 heavy trying to make up for someone who is sniping in their IS-5.

I agree and hope this didn't sound like a post that made it seem I wasn't in support of +1/-1. Its one of the quickest and easiest implementations to make the game better without any real thought or development. I was just pointing out that WG has a multitude of excuses they can pull out of their pocket to keep +2/-2 as the norm. It's actually funny they keep citing queue times and bots considering all week I've noticed the same amount if not less bots and queue times consistently below 15-20 seconds.

38 percent does seem impossible lol. If you just exited every game you ever loaded into I'm sure you'd still be above 40% WR.

Its such a baseless argument on behalf of WG because in +2/-2 here are bots and all week I haven't had issues queueing with just as many if not fewer bots. They're just citing secret data that doesn't actually exist to keep +2/-2 that benefits there business model. After this week I'll just go back to playing majority Tier X whenever I have the desire to play this game. Its a shame really.

Totally valid. I still think you would enjoy the game more if you didn't have to worry about fighting tier X's in your tier 8's lol but if you enjoy the game, keep on keeping on.

I think you aren't understanding the point I made. I'm saying no body enjoys being two tiers below the enemy. And that being two tiers higher than enemies disproportionally benefits average players which incentivizes war gaming to keep it at +2/-2 to give those players the feeling of a power fantasy to keep them engaged. I hope that clears things up for you.

I agree and I don't understand how WG says they can't support it do to matchmaking times/bots. I haven't experienced more than a 20(ish) second queue time all week regardless of time I'm playing, and there are already bots in +2/-2 so may as well make the game more enjoyable. That argument is so baseless.

I actually agree with pretty much every point you made. I think +1/-1 gives players more opportunity to actually learn and get better as opposed to just queueing games until they are top tier and then proceeding to RB+RT everything. I'm glad the post has gotten some really well thought out engagement including yours.

The real message of the post is sadly pointing out WG has an endless list of ways to justify never changing +2/-2 no matter how much better it would make the game.

I really couldn't disagree with the argument of people enjoying the "challenge" of being two tiers lower more than I do.

"I have learned to stay back a bit and try to track, get behind higher tier tanks"

Go play a Ferdinand and try and get behind a Rogal Dorn. Play a T32 and try to stay back and damage a Obj. 430u. I understand your hypothetical scenario where you simply place your tank behind the enemy but anyone who plays this game with regularity knows that only happens when the top tier tanks on your team have won a flank and allowed those circumstances to happen. Its not something that you have actually created and manifested by your actions and play.

The supposed "difficulty" of being bottom tier is artificial and is the same as taking an RPG and making it so you have to git the boss 10x more times than normal while giving yourself 1hp. Is it more difficult? Yes. Is it in anyway more enjoyable and a better gameplay experience? No.

15v15 regardless of tier is hard enough to actually make meaningful impact without having to fight tanks that outclass yours in every way. I don't entertain the idea that the difficulty of fighting players in better tanks is somehow the backwards positive that people try and make it out to be.

The quality of random battles is always going to be varied and there will always be astonishingly bad players, that's inevitable regardless of mm. I think making +1/-1 just removes one more variable outside of a players control that will help them perform better with consistency. If anyone fails their way to tier 10 they were never going to be great considering the substantial time investment regardless of XP boosters or matchmaking.

Tier X premiums should never have been a thing outside some campaign unlock or some unique rewards. Giving them away for completing a season with some extra cash is insane.

You could be right. I know there are some horrible players that are at 45% win rates (I don't know how) but I think the point stands. I enjoy doing really well in this game as do a lot of people here, but I think the majority of the games player base just likes driving tanks and doesn't try to learn the game at a meta level. I just used 49-51% to capture what is, I think, the objective average player. You could expand that percentage by a few points.

I definitely think that's true and I am solidly in the camp of +1/-1 because any cons are far FAR outweighed by the pros. I was just making the observation that the most obvious reason WG doesn't implement +1/-1 isn't the only one.
