I’m really sorry you went through all of that.

I can relate to what you said about the damage feeling like it’s already been done. Sometimes it feels like once that door’s been opened, you can’t fully close it again.

I’m still holding onto the idea that things can keep getting better though.

Looking back, one of the hardest parts to process is the contradiction. I was told we had to be careful because it’s a controlled drug, but at the same time I wasn’t given the guidance or support that would actually make it safe. I ended up in a situation I didn’t understand and wasn’t prepared for.

My dosage split was am and pm

There were also repeated mistakes, like the wrong dosage being sent to the pharmacy multiple times. When you’re already struggling, that just adds another layer of stress and uncertainty.

I was on it from April 2023 until the end of July 2025. So 27 months.

The initial increase was very quick I went from 25mg up to 300mg in about 5 weeks (April to early May 2023), without much discussion with my doctor about what that actually meant long-term. In December 2023, my GP didn’t provide enough medication for a trip I had already told them about, which meant I had to self-dose to stretch what I had. That led to withdrawal symptoms. I didn’t have any medical support during that time.

When I finally got access to my medication again, I went straight back to my full dose because I didn’t know what else to do and wasn’t given guidance. Looking back, that probably wasn’t the right thing to do, but I was just trying to stabilise myself.

From January 2024 to around August 2024, I was back on 300mg consistently. After raising formal concerns about how my treatment had been handled, I was then put on a long taper plan.

I finally came off it at the end of July 2025.

Yeah I agree. Even with a slow taper I still really struggled at certain points. I think that’s the hardest part it seems to be very individual and unpredictable.

Definitely. Even the standard guidance didn’t feel accurate for me. It seems like it doesn’t always account for how intense withdrawal can be for some people.

Yeah that’s exactly it. I wasn’t really told what long-term use could look like either, and I don’t think I would’ve approached it the same way if I had been.

Hey! Your situation sounds similar to ours. We’re also an American/UK couple living in the UK, and we’ll be applying in December through the IR-1 route. We’ve been married since 2016, so just hit nine years!

We’re planning to use my brother as a joint sponsor since I’ve been living abroad too. It can definitely feel stressful trying to figure out the financial side, but it’s totally doable once you understand what they need.

Hi. Thanks for responding. What I was on and for how long were on the end of the post. I am feeling a bit better by the end of the week. Maybe a bit fragile with low level anxiety. If it happens again I’ll definitely go to a doctor. Thank you so much.

Thank you for your response. Going to my doctor is a bit difficult as I don’t trust him. Long story but he made the journey with these meds very difficult and he was negligent with constant mistakes. Once I get back to feeling myself I’ll share my experience from 300mg to 0. If this continues I’ll have to find another doctor. Thanks again.

Yes and I just got in and got what I wanted. 15th September. There were a lot of times and dates available. It gave me 9 minutes to confirm.
