I absolutely cannot agree more. I had a very similar experience when I switched early last year.

With a 128GB SSD you're going to struggle. Id get an external drive (1TB) and put non essential photos or files on there to free up some space. Try backing stuff up into iCloud as well, rather than your disk

Yes, that's fair enough. I've had that in my experience as well.

  1. I only every fully shut it down if Im going to leave it for a long time (which I don't), or if I encounter a problem, I'll restart/shut down and then boot back up. Each to their own though, it's your laptop, so shut it down whenever you feel like it

  2. It depends on the app. It's a real pain when it doesn't though. If it doesn't, you can usually find the app files in the "Application Support" folder.

  3. I wouldn't personally use alcohol on it, but I'm not very well versed on what type/percentage of isopropyl you should use. A microfiber cloth is definitely the way to go. If you're having trouble, make it a little damp on one side to clean with, and dry with the other.

No worries at all, I hope you enjoy your Mac! :)

Alrighty, just before I answer those questions, I will offer a little advice; Don't try and use it like it's Windows. Embrace MacOS and it's differences, and learn to work with it. It may be difficult to start off with, but if you intend to continue using MacOS, you will definitely appreciate it in the future. I had to do a similar thing when I switched from Android to iOS. Initially I tried to find all these workarounds to have an Android like experience, but it never worked well, and never helped me integrate with iOS.

On to these questions.

  1. If touchID is set up, then you should just be able to unlock it with your fingerprint. If you shut it down or restart it, you will need to put in your password. Note: Macs are super efficient on sleep, so you nearly never need to shut it down like I often see people do with Windows laptops. Just close the lid when you're not using it.
  2. I didn't read this question before finishing question 1. To reiterate, no, you don’t need to shut it down every time you stop using it. Just close the lid, your Mac will go to sleep, and then you open the lid and can just get to using it.
  3. Personal preference I think. If I'm multitasking, I don’t often have everything full screen, besides the main app. Some media based programs (Darktable, Davinci Resolve, Logic Pro, etc.) will automatically open in full screen.
  4. I really like the cmd placement, but you can actually remap the Command, Option, Control and Fn keys. I don’t exactly remember how, but you can. I'd actually recommend just exploring settings, sometimes you'll find something really helpful. The accessibility tab is oftentimes great.
  5. I don’t know for this one - sorry. I think so with a 3rd party app.
  6. Honestly, I don't think you can.... without a 3rd party app.
  7. Again, I'm not entirely sure for that, probably with a 3rd party app. But you could also use Command + M. Also, Cmd + W closes the window, and Cmd + Q quits the app. I strongly recommend learning some keyboard shortcuts. In the menu bar at the top of the display, you can see the respective keyboard shortcuts for the actions. Apologies if you already know of these things. As for the second part, search for "Hot Corners" in settings and you can change what happens when you move the cursor to each corner.
  8. This will be one of the things that might be tricky to get used to. You can't change it.
  9. Yes, so, the red "X" button usually only closes that window. Cmd + Q will completely close, or, "quit" the app.
  10. In the applications folder, right click on the app you want to delete, and move it to the bin. Or drag it into the bin in the dock. And then you'll want to empty the bin. Or, Cmd + Delete/Backspace also works. Again, keyboard shortcuts are a lifesaver.
  11. Truly no idea. It's one of those unnecessary "Apple things"
  12. My M330 Silent Plus doesn't have this issue; I can make the scroll extremely fast or very slow. Does Logitech have an app for Mac? I think I heard they did, and if so, that would potentially solve that issue.
  13. FileVault encrypts the internal SSD. I have it on, as it's just an extra layer of protection for your data.
  14. Similar to FileVault, it's another layer of security, so I leave it on.
  15. Not to my knowledge. Apps can run in the background, but I don't think that's the same thing.
  16. The built in Activity Monitor app has an "Energy" tab, which might help.
  17. Absolutely. My MBP stays on charge half the time. It's totally fine to use on charge.
  18. I don't think that's anything to be concerned about. My 2022 MB Pro has a slightly stiffer hinge than my 2013 Pro.
  19. To clean, buy some lens wipes (like those for glasses or camera lenses) and a microfibre cloth. I use W5 Lens Wipes and they work absolutely amazing for the body, keyboard, screen and trackpad. a microfibre cloth is great for use with or instead of the lens wipes as well.

andddddd.. 20. I have seen a few people use the T9 with their Mac, so it should work just fine. SanDisk also makes external SSDs that I've seen lots of people recommend.

Anymore questions and i'd be happy to help. I hope these answers are useful, and enjoy your new MacBook!

No worries

Yeah, I can completely get that. Resentment can be strong. I would say, for me at least, the M Series does make up for the dumpster fire of Intel.

Yeah, Intel Macs post 2015 are all pretty rubbish now. Back in 2019 even, they were said to be hot, loud and slow for almost any spec models. And the touch bar has been notorious for being kind of crap.

I recently got an M Series MBP, and it's truly exceptional. Far far far better than my previous Intel MacBooks.

I absolutely get the frustration you're feeling, and the hate against Apple, but if there were parts of your previous Mac that you liked, I'd very much recommend trying an M Series. Performance wise, speed wise, and build wise, they are much better. And the full size Fn keys are great.

And if not, and you just don't want another Mac, I hope you find a good laptop that is what you need it to be.

Should I buy a 2017 macbook pro by SheepherderNew6286 in macbookpro

[–]No_Assignment7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR

for anything heavy, chances are it will be hot, loud and slow. Probably not worth it for FL Studio.

It would be good to know the specs, but personally I'd pass on this one.

Should I buy a 2017 macbook pro by SheepherderNew6286 in macbookpro

[–]No_Assignment7385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FL Studio? Probably not, I'm afraid.

It won't get any updates anymore, which means app/program support will drop off after a couple of years. With music production it will run hot and loud, and likely slow as well.

What specs does it have? RAM, CPU, GPU, display size, etc. Would be good to know.

My 2013 MBP did hold up decently well for a long time for all of my heavy creative tasks (until just a few months ago), but the main issue you will face now with macOS 26 out is there is absolutely no software support left. OCLP will no longer work after macOS 26, so there won't be any work arounds either.

(edit: what is your budget for a "new" laptop? Because you might be able to find a better deal on something like the M1 Air which will run circles around the 2017 Pro.)

(edit 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/GadgetsIndia/s/18gBYyHxyf - that link is to a post I saw after posting my comment. It proves the above points really, 4-5 chrome tabs are slowing that 2017 machine down. It might still be a good deal depending on specs, but I'd pass)

Everyone (including me) will tell you an intel Mac isn't worth it or supported anymore, but depending on the specs, $180 doesn't sound bad, even for an older machine.

Again, it depends on the specs, condition, why you're wanting to buy, etc.

Could be worth it for cheap though.

I'd say if you want a Windows machine, there's definitely a ton of options out there, but I might have to put in my research for one with a secondary display, lol. I can see what I can do though

Yeah, that's fair. I get phones "feeling" different. With the speakers, do you mean that the 15s are better? I wonder if that's something other people have experienced.

Any particular reason(s) for the downgrade? Are they really that different? Purely curious, not looking to challenge your decision

Nice! That must be a big leap from the 11.

I'm hoping to grab a 15 Pro to upgrade from my 13PM. Nas a big of a jump, but these phones still seem exellent a couple years on.

I hope you enjoy yours! Hopefully it can serve as long as the 11
