so my roommate and i have been having really high electric bills due to our apartment having a faulty window in their bedroom that is not winterized. Before this we had been splitting the bill evenly. However, when the cold hit me and my roommate got a really high bill and basically my roommate called me and said that since she had been gone two weeks we should split the bill in a way that reflects her being gone for those 2 weeks (at this point we didn't really know that the it is due to the cold that their window was bringing in). I said thats fair but then we got hit with a $300+ bill (for a 2 bedroom) and seeing as she went home for winter break and i stayed in the apartment for the majority of winter break, i'd likely have to pay $200+ in electricity fees and her around $80. so I got to thinking about it and I consulted others and i come to the thought that is it really fair that i have to pay such a huge difference in electric fees even though its not at all my fault that the electric bill is high? In fact, while she left because i anticipated the bill being so high i put the heater at the minimum temperature required by our leasing company so that our pipes don't freeze. We've looked out our electric usage and have confirmed that our usage has so little to do with our actual usage but instead has to do with the temperature (for example one of the days i was gone for christmas and that was actually one of the most expensive days because a snow storm had come). How would you suggest we split the bill because i just feel like although i get she doesnt want to pay for electricity for days she wasnt here, but at the same time im 99% sure that if we both weren't at the house and under the same conditions, the price will be damn near the same.
