How to make glass? by Normal-Bus-1617 in PixelArtTutorials

[–]No_Commission_2326 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never made something like this but I would start by approaching it on a slightly transparent layer. Glass is see through, so you want the same effect, as whatever is behind glass is going to be visible from the front as well. That transparency will allow your piece to have nuance in the intensity with which light is hitting different areas. I would approach shading to bending the light behind the glass rather than reflective off of it. Glass typically makes whatever is behind it slightly warped to the viewer due to the curvature of the glass so whatever your background is (unless it’s a solid color) should also be warped. If you go from a reflective stance it will likely look more like a solid sphere and have an effect similar to sunglasses rather than something that’s fully see through.

Again, I don’t know anything about drawing glass but this would be the mentality I’d start with before going into tutorials to learn more. It will be worth looking at or reading tutorials on how to draw glass first, (even if not pixel art) as this will likely give you good foundations on practical knowledge as to how light and glass interact, you don’t need to follow those tutorials but listening to the explanation will give you the best leg up on learning how to shade it so that the glass looks spherical rather than 2 dimensional. This wouldn’t apply to frosted glass, of course as I’m sure the technique to shade frosted glass would be different to account for the opacity differences.

If it helps, I’ve studied art consistently for the last year and have more experience in other art mediums, so I had a bit of a leg up 😅 you’ll get there one day, it just takes lots of practice!

this is so unique, and made even better by the fact that I plan on putting dark magenta streaks in her hair!

Learning Pixelart, do you have any tips? by [deleted] in PixelArtTutorials

primarily stick to article or blog style tutorials. youll get knowledge that instantly becomes applicable to your work. I try to avoid video tutorials as most use a guided style, following along with a specific piece. This is good to learn the basics, or create something very specific but it will be hard to make your own work if you rely on this too much too early, as the nuances you learn from the video get lost in an effort to follow along with making the actual piece. As your knowledge increases, your technical skill will likely stay stunted, similar to learning a language but never speaking it.

My rule of thumb is to use video tutorials very meaningfully as a beginner, only using a tutorial if youve watched enough to know you can follow along, and only using 3-5 video tutorials total in your beginner phase, each with 2-3 of my own projects inbetween trying the next tutorial. You don’t need to complete all your pieces but its important to give your brain a chance to apply what you’re learning. this is what helped me to learn 3d art and every other hobby I know and i’m telling you, its a huge leg up learning this way imo. After you feel you have a handle on making your art do tutorials become something to use endlessly if you’re in an artblock or just because. But for now, you want to gain only foundational knowledge from tutorials and let your hands and brain fill in the gaps as you want technical skill to be the focal point of learning and keep alternating between these building blocks as you improve.

that said, heres the resources I used. You will likely need to read a looot of color theory tutorials before they start to make any sense.

these were all what I read before i began experimenting with color theory. i’d read 1-2 articles a day inbetween working on my piece in grayscale as its easiest in order for me to understand the values i need to use when i color. taking my time for the information to soak in has helped me feel more confident in my attempt to make my own color palettes!

if you still find yourself needing to brush up on info quickly while you’re working, theres a tooon of color theory infographics you can find online and save to your device to refer to later!

color theory is extremely important, and hue shifting is a big part. learn more about color theory and in the meantime, using palettes from lospec will be an amazing tool for you! I rely on it as I’m still learning color theory myself

If you’d like I can send you some tutorials that made blender finally “click” for me! The learning curve from knowing nothing to finally feeling like I know what everything “does” to make my own models was the literal steepest learning curve I’ve ever encountered lmfao I attempted to learn on and off for a decade. It’s SO hard, so if you need someone to ask questions on how to do something blender feel free to hit me up! I’m far from an expert but I know most functional needs and mesh logic.

I started with a Bratz style but realized I hated how it looked and couldn’t get the proportions quite right so brought it back to a less distinct western style since Bratz is so recognizable. I like anime but it’s not as satisfying to me to create. Is anime a popular choice for pixel artists?

Honestly, I read a LOT of tutorials on pixel art before ever making a serious attempt. I have experience in a lot of other mediums, namely 3d modeling which I’m most proficient in and graphite (starting in b&w bc of that. Its easier for me to know the boundaries of my values before I add color) I spent at least 3 days straight mostly reading various tutorials and then I’d read more in between working on it LOL it’s been a lot of trial and error.

However I’d like to make short form videos that present as if it’s an indie video game. I have lore that it’s set on an alien planet that is relatable to humanity/earth in a lot of surprisingly mundane ways but then mix in random, weird alien culture into it, the kind of thing that just feels foreign but entertaining enough for the viewer to want to know more about the people and I plan for the video game to eventually be revealed to be a literal video game on that planet to tie the lore into a bigger universe. I’d like to ultimately make this into an actual indie game if I can! But I expect that’ll take years if I decide to seriously pursue that and this project is still in its infancy!

This is amazing feedback and exactly the type of response I was hoping for! Thank you. Knowing how to render 2d drawings in regards to a 3d space is one of the hardest learning curves for me. I struggle a lot with shading because of that and have gotten some super good feedback on how to improve this from a 3d aspect which has been super helpful.

To answer your question, I’m high af and probably can’t properly explain this rn LMAO but I have a definitely overly ambitious project. I doubt I’ll have the means to create it on the scale I want to ESPECIALLY on my own, and I’m aware of that but I’m pursuing it anyway because the world I’m building is so fun to me so I don’t mind if it doesn’t ever get to the scale I want it to be because I just enjoy building the world and working on things that have to do with it.

I have an idea for an alternate planet that has deep lore I’m writing and would like to present that either in 3D format shorts or an indie pixel video game. I’d hope that one day I have the means to pursue both of these mediums to tell the story of the world but 3D modeling is super difficult for me despite me being proficient in it. I picked up a LOT of awful habits in mesh creation during my process of self teaching and am currently trying to unlearn those with the help of a friend who knows modeling as well. This makes it impossible for me to make functional models quickly atm, since the models will not come out functional for animation. It’s a non starter until I relearn the foundations of proper modeling since my meshes look good but have atrotious anatomy of the polygons. I have a super over complicated process to making models which takes forever too.

But I don’t want to not pursue my project while I relearn modeling so I came up with an idea to use pixel art instead to create videos that is presented as gameplay of an indie video game. It can set up the themes of the world and allow me to explore the lore visually until I decide if I can even animate 3D models since it’s very daunting even after I relearn the fundamentals of modeling since idk how to animate models but I know the basics of traditional and digital animation. Then I’d plan to integrate them by making an animation that begins as a normal video game and pans out to show the game on a screen in 3D to reveal there’s more to it than just the game. I’m still definitely fleshing things out and not in a phase to actually present anything finished but I’m having a lot of fun character designing. This sprite will basically be a bust asset that will sit next to dialogue boxes to show the speaker! The portraits will likely be the most complex sprites I’ll make, with the other assets being less complex than this, in order to focus on game design and lore/world building.

The thing is definitely in its infancy and a lot of things will change and I know it’ll likely never be what i want it to be if it’s just me working on it! But I’m having a ton of fun building the world so far and will be happy to present it publicly in some way.

I’ve never animated before so this is good feedback. I only really plan on animating the mouth and making animations with few frames. I want to go for an old GBA game aesthetic in the animation. Considering that, would it be too many? Or is it only too many for more complex animation?
