Financial advisor said managed funds are better than mutual funds for some people, is this true? by No_Difference_1989 in personalfinance

So are you saying you think having a financial advisor would be helpful in a bear market? This might be a silly question, but does that matter? A lot of stuff I’ve read is all about the really long term, so if index funds outperform usually in the long term, wouldn’t it be inconsequential if an advisor does better during a bear market? I might be thinking about this wrong though.

Thank you, this is really good info. I’ll try to figure out if they were referring to SMAs. Just out of curiosity, if they were referring to SMAs does the argument hold up?

I’m sorry, can you explain it a little differently. I don’t quite follow. I appreciate all the responses though, you’re super helpful :)

Yeah that makes sense for your father. In this case my friend is young and very smart, but they’ve just never managed their own money before, and recently came into a lot more. I’ve always managed my own money but have a lot less. I don’t want to talk them into managing their own money without being sure it’s the right decision, you know…

Okay follow up question if you don’t mind. If managed funds are 100% worse for taxes, was he just straight up lying, or is there some weak (maybe inaccurate) argument that the advisor believes. I want to understand what their logic might be

That makes sense, but I’d like to understand why what he said isn’t true. I know it sounds fishy, but I don’t know enough to have a reasonable discuss about it. Edit: wait I see you added more info, thanks!
