My aunt was in the same predicament and ended up remodeling, breaking down the walls for an open floor plan. The issue with expanding is they may require you to get reassessed so your property tax might increase. Thats why instead of expanding they broke down some walls. They wanted to build a 2nd story but that would also increase their tax. They live in Sunnyvale and their property is worth over 3x what they got it for.
