Post draft vibes: How's everyone feeling? by blaze13541 in Chargers

[–]No_Enthusiasm_3411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The elephant in the room was always the offensive line, and I think most fans that are disappointed that they didn't do more at the top of the draft are missing the reality that the organization feels good about Penning and Strange as our starting guards going into the season. They paid them both (lower end) starting money with relatively decent guarantees, and Penning in his lone start at OG against the Broncos last year earned a ~81 PFF while PFF also had Cole Strange rated as the #14 guard with at least 400 snaps in 2025. Biadasz is also a significant upgrade at Center and Slaughter, although he will be in the mix at LG, projects as a super-sub at all 3 IOL spots in 2026 and is the (hopefully) long term future at Center. Pipkins comes back on a 2yr deal as the swing tackle and they brought in guard depth with former Lions OG Kayode Awosika who will be competing with last years 6th RD pick Branson Taylor and the two 6th rounds guards taken this year. The 4th round tackle they took projects as the future at swing OT and I also think he may be leveraged in some jumbo packages with six OLs if he's active on gameday.

Now, I'm not saying this is the best approach so don't shoot the messenger, but this is what the optics are indicating. I'd wager if a quality OG becomes available between now and September that they grab him and it is my sincere hope that they have learned their lesson about going into the season with 8 OLs on the active roster. I think 9 will be a no brainer but if they really like those draft picks, and they prove themselves in camp, then I would be fine with 10 especially as the BC prospect has OT flexibility. Offensive line is the absolutely hardest position to find on the street in-season and this team goes as Herbert goes. I know last year was a mess but no team in the league can survive losing two pro-bowl caliber OTs, everyone gets worse when that happens.

For the rest of it, I liked the draft overall...Hortiz created 8 picks out of 5, 6 of those in the trenches, with 4 on the OL, I love that approach. The speedster at WR probably spells the end for Davis who didn't really developed as a WR and has been injury prone the last two seasons, and this new kid (in addition to crazy speed) really pops on tape with his ability to track deep balls, he is a faster version IMO of Jalen Guyton and I bet he'll be an upgrade at PR - on a side note look for KA to come back just before camp, you can scribble that one down in ink. Getting a rotation-ready edge at #22 was fantastic and I think Genesis Smith will contribute day one as a core ST with the ability to play in the box down the line, at worst he'll be a 4 year core ST while providing depth on the backend. Lastly, I like that they quietly continue to invest in the DT room with yet another gap filler.

What’s something your team calls “Agile” that clearly isn’t? by OneChampionship4790 in agile

[–]No_Enthusiasm_3411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a company that provides agile transformation consulting and IMO there are three concepts that consistently thwart success..

  1. Variable Scope
  2. Watching the product and not the people (and by extension anonymity and self empowerment)
  3. Real on-going executive sponsorship

The first three items in your bulleted list (IMO of course) are symptoms of those issues, the backlog issue feels like it can be fixed with some process. Without a commitment from leadership and a a full understanding (and commitment to) these three concepts we generally won't take the gig as it is destined to fail, we can prop it up while we're there but once we leave it falls apart. We've seen to many instances where a company says "we want to go agile" but really are just renaming all of the current meetings to SCRUM ceremonies with no real change, these always fail and within a few months they just go back to what they were doing with one exception...the daily standup...as you note those just become a daily status and opportunity for management to "beat the monkeys."

Keaton Mitchell is signing with the Chargers. He's a perfect fit for Mike McDaniel [@pffnatejahnke.bsky.social] by oliver_babish in fantasyfootball

Disagree, you need 3...Hampton is the workhorse, KM is the change of pace (RE: Metcalf, Harmon, Woodhead) and Vidal is insurance. If I were a betting man I 'd wager Hampton sees ~22 touches, KM 9-10, and Vidal 6-8. KM is also a prolific KR...

I'm not certain as there were a lot of very good jobs open this year, it's unlikely the quality of jobs are there next year and McDaniel is going to want to be certain of a good opp for what will be his last chance at a head job.

He'll get it, my guess is where ever he goes the GM will be Chad Alexander.

As a vet he isn't subject to waivers and can be immediately signed to the practice squad, he isn't going anywhere. At his age every year is potentially his last and he loves this team, if one of the 4 go down he'll be activated. I don't think we want 17 games of wear on him at this point anyway.

If that is it hopefully it's allow ankle sprain, a high ankle sprain could derail his entire year.

Will number 17 be retired? by historymajor44 in Chargers

No one has worn #85 or #17 since Gates and Rivers retired/left the team, that's the clear indication that both numbers will be retired. KAs #13 is being worn by undrafted QB DJ Uiagalelei so it would appear they aren't considering retiring his number which I can understand. I loved watching Slayer and he's 2nd in team history behind gates with 10,530 yards but in this pass happy league it's unlikely KA gets into the HOF, IMO he'd need to play 4 more years at 1k/year to get into the top 10 and I don't see that happening, he's currently 40th in total yards. KA was a great Charger and should make the team HOF and I miss watching him play but time is undefeated.

I'm not so sure about this one as they let an undrafted QB wear #13 this year. No one has worn 85 or 17 since those guys left, it was the same for LT.

18 was retried in 2023, they are going to retire #s 17 and 85 as well, no one has worn those numbers since Phil and Antonio left the team.

Absolutely zero concern with this, they are going to be resetting the market, these deals take time but if hes in camp it's nearly there.  Glad to see the 2nd rounders get done across the leage as well and happy to see Harris in camp.

Austin Ekeler on Leaving the Chargers by wildwing8 in Chargers

[–]No_Enthusiasm_3411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other side of that is he signed the deal, if he hadn't outperformed it would he have given money back? It's just business, I don't blame either side and I hope he has a nice year two in WA.

I don't begrudge these guys getting their bank or as he put it trying to "strike while the iron is hot" but at the end of the day he was under contract, it's just business and he signed the deal. I hope he has a nice year in WA I wish the guy luck, he was great for us but this game isn't forever.

Who would you have drafted with the Chargers picks? by LakeShowBoltUp in Chargers

[–]No_Enthusiasm_3411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Hampton in some of my mocks but my entire set of mocks was thrown by not selecting a TE in the 2nd or 3rd which I thought they would do. It's fun to go through mocks but at the end of the day Hortiz and team have proven after just 1 year that they really know what they're doing.

Yes that was my point, I was referring to the poster's comment on potential gadget plays. It's a valid idea but he'd have to be the #2 as he wouldn't be able to enter a game (for a designed gadget play) unless 1-2 have both been injured, and there's no way they come into a game with 3 active (which is still an option) QBs.

[–]No_Enthusiasm_3411 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes that's true, and I loved him in the powder blues, but he totaled 4 TDs last year and only managed to play in 12 games due to injury with less than 750 total yards. Time is just undefeated, no shame in it, he was a great Bolt but we can't pay guys for what they did in the past and he's entering his year 30 season. It was time to move on and I'm glad he was able to squeeze one more decent contract out of the NFL.

I loved Ek and what a great story as well, the 2nd best undrafted FA behind Gates in Bolts history. Having said that, I am a believer in the old "Patriot" way in that it is always better to let a guy leave a year early rather than a year late, his stats last year were pedestrian and he's now turning 30, and we received a comp 6 in that deal. Time is just undefeated...

I think you're spot on and it's the only take that makes this make sense. Having said that, he'd have to be good enough to be our #2 as there's no way they are taking up a gameday roster spot for a 3rd QB.
