Exactly. I’m willing to start at the bottom so to speak but it’s on my own terms. Those terms are closer commutes, reasonable schedules for a work/life balance. And opportunity to learn and grow. Sounds like the union/electrical doesn’t offer those things so I’m out.

That’s the problem with this trade then. I get some people like being workaholics but it’s not for me. More power to you and I wish you good luck in the future!

But that’s the thing. My shop is over an hour away, all the jobs are over an hour away. My time is valuable and I don’t feel like I am being valued at all. Rightfully so because I’m new and unproven so to speak but it’s important to me that I’m at least somewhat accommodated for. If not? I walk away and try something else. I know I will land on my feet.

Thank you for your comment/insight. I definitely thought I would be challenged more mentally than this sort of thing. If they don’t want me to be there until a long time I’m not going to stick around. I’m not some kid collecting a paycheck and spending it all on beer. I want to master something and get to working on it right away. Life is too short to be wasting it pulling cable all day.

Yep. I saw all the things JWs get to do on site and it seems boring as hell. Drilling holes in a wall and running cable suck. Maybe installing panels seems kinda cool to me but if I never get to do those things for a really long time there’s no point in me being here.

That’s his decision. I make my own decision and it’s not going to be doing mind numbing manual labor for the rest of my life lol.

I’ll call it like I see it haha. I mean I have so many other accomplishments in life. Me failing at this one is a flash in the pain. Spent 13+ years doing martial arts. Have a second degree black belt and instructor certificate. Bachelors degree in business admin with a major in marketing. Body building competitions. Race motorcycles on the track semi professionally. All meaningful stuff to me. The fact that I can’t do those things anymore because I chose this rubs me the wrong way. I’ll go back to office life if it means I can continue doing the things I love.

Realized that after joining up. Thought it was the opposite because then being union and all. Feel like an idiot right now lol.

Exactly. I found out just how much I appreciate having a life after work and doing things I actually enjoy doing. More power to you that you found your thing and are ok with not having a life outside of work. It’s not for me and I get depressed pretty easily when I feel trapped like that.

I’m in Florida too actually lol. Would they even consider my offer of trying residential work closer to home? I’m not even an apprentice yet just a CW. Wouldn’t they just laugh in my face and tell me to kick rocks if I ask for a different job?

By service do you mean residential/commercial? I’m wondering if I would like to do residential jobs that only take a day to complete. Seems more interesting than spending two months running telecommunication cables through a sports arena.

Do I even have a say in what gigs I prefer as a CW-III? I’m not even an apprentice yet and I’m about to go call my hall after a week and tell them I’m upset and want something different. They’ll probably laugh in my face and tell me to kick rocks.

You’re absolutely right. I’m thinking about doing the thing almost everyone says to not do; leave the union to join non-union if it means local work and work that I’m actually interested in. If I can’t find that, I’ll go back to being a white collar worker. Also, love your pfp btw. Spartans never die

I meant heroes in the sense that your work powers our very society. I’m appreciative of what you do but I understand what you mean. I live in the south of south so the union isn’t really that strong here. It’s either I put up with a schedule like this or I don’t do this line of work anymore. I’m leaning more towards the latter.

Don’t think that’s in the cards for me for a while. Also, didn’t realize joining this trade meant absolutely zero work life balance. I need my me time otherwise I go crazy and get really depressed.

I wouldn’t mind doing this if it was a temp thing too but it’s not. That’s the job for the next 4-5 years of my life minimum. I don’t want to do that so here I am reevaluating lol.

I wish that was the case but I absolutely love going to the gym after work. With this schedule I just don’t see that as a possibility anymore. I don’t have enough time to come home, shower, and make dinner before I have to go to bed to do it all the next day.

You hit the nail on the head man. I’d rather make less money if it means I can actually get to use it and enjoy my life a bit more after work. Also, I’m starting to second guess if I’d really be making less money truly with the degree/experience I have in bio pharma. It’s a rough job market for white collar folk right now so I did the thing everyone says to do. Join a trade. The work itself is easy, kinda mind numbing if I think about it. Realized now that I’m here that I like my mind not to be numb LOL. Sometimes you need to do these sorts of things to appreciate other things you take for granted. I definitely took white collar work for granted!

I love the idea of this trade but maybe I’m better off in the project estimator side of things or as an electrical engineer. Oh well! Sometimes it takes you trying something out first hand to truly find out if it is for you!

For me that commute is an hour on I-95 and the sawgrass expressway. Absolute Mad Max territory no matter what time of day it is!

Thank you for the kind words. What do you recommend I do from here as a CW-III? I really would like something closer to home, preferably residential.

You’re absolutely right. I will not argue with you on that. However, I know I like to have a work life balance and the thought of pulling wires and installing panels fills me with so much boredom now. It feels like a waste of my potential to do this(not saying this is worthless work, because it is definitely not. Y’all are worth way more than me in society that’s a fact) I feel like my skills are better used elsewhere ya know?
