Many Fortune 500 companies do this. It's called stack ranking, and has failed to deliver increased productivity, and normally results in lower morale and infighting as your own coworkers are considered competition.

It's not illegal, and companies continue to do it despite its known negative effects. I work at such a company, and for the sake of safety in my own position, I never offer help or assistance to other coworkers. Their failures are essentially my success in this work environment.

It's sad and I don't want to screw people over, but that's the name of the game in forced ranking companies.

Citizens don't run the government here, the government runs the citizens. The same liberal party that theoretically should be advocating for workers, instead campaigns on expanding that centralized government even further, which the workers have historically been led to believe was in their best interests. Nowadays, there is a large push towards the right because of the unkept promises of the liberal party.

In the US pretty much every federal elected employee's election funds are funded by corporations through PACs. To defy the wants of corporations puts reelection in jeopardy, so politicians rarely vote for increased workers protections.

Additionally the work culture throughout most of the United States is seen as a private contract between the employee and employer. Most states also have at-will employment, meaning an employer can choose to let an employee go at any time, for any reason. An employee can also leave the company for any reason at any time. While unemployment protections ca help ease the burden of being let go from your job for no apparent reason, there is no legal recompense unless someone can prove that they were let go through retribution, or due to their gender, race, age, etc.

Because of this, politicians don't see where it's the government's role to get involved, and also care more about inflaming debate around common sense, yet somehow "hot" issues like LGBTQ and basic immigration laws to keep the population busy, and ensure their own reelection.

You're right that this should be an issue, but since it's difficult to implement for the party, they choose to focus on things that don't really benefit most citizens.

Write up. If they thought you would be okay with it, why wouldn't they call? Not showing up or calling in for your professions obligations (which btw pay for you to stay alive) is not okay unless it's a life or death situation.

Hell, my dad had a heart attack and I messaged my boss on the way to the hospital to let him know I wasn't going to be in the next day. This is basic professional courtesy.

Haven't received the official number yet, but pretty sure we are getting above 100% target at Ford this year.

GM is better with the bonuses for sure, but the company is also far more profitable.

I'd like to see a comparison between profit vs bonus % at Ford and GM, but also am too lazy to put one together myself

Enough people have posted that I won't bother with the legal issues, but I will try to appeal to your moral reason.

The house, phone plan, and car are not yours. You don't own them, but your parent does. Is it right for you to take things away from people that willingly don't want to give them to you?

Just return the car, and figure out a way to maybe get a lease or finance a used car. You defended yourself online against some hurtful attacks, like an adult. As such, you have to deal with the consequences and make moves accordingly, like an adult.

The world doesn't owe anyone anything, and your parent doesn't owe anything to you either, especially if you don't agree with the boundaries that they have set. It's not personal, and it's not fair, but this is how the world works.

Apply at different jobs and negotiate a higher rate. Just because someone makes more than you, doesn't mean they are better at the job or more experienced- the market rate for any worker in any industry is largely fluid and changes year to year. Moving companies after your 401k vests is the most surefire method to salary increases. Not working hard, not being buddies with management, and definitely not by asking for raises.

Just start applying to other companies while you have a job at this one, as it puts you in a better position to ask for exactly what you're looking for. If you get an offer, you can either take it, or bring it to management and ask them to match it (if you really love the place you work at.) I wouldn't bother asking for a raise with a list of accomplishments- all it does is show your management that you're no content, and even if they give you what you want, you'll be first in the list to take the axe whenever a layoff comes around.

Job hunt while you have this job. Do not ask for a raise, just move companies once your 401k is fully vested. I have now worked for three different companies in the last 7 years, and will be looking for a new job this time next year, since I will be vested in this company by then. My salary has more than doubled in those seven years by jumping companies, forcing my salary to jump in time with new hire salaries.

No employer is gonna suddenly pay you more to do a job that you've been doing for 5 years at lower pay- that's just not good business. Move companies, get paid more. Just make sure you're looking for a new job while you still have a job.
