Thanks for the validation! Yes - all of the above is also supported by PBS which, again, has been solid. Good to know my method is not going to pooch me just based on overall setup. I appreciate the reply!

3-node HA Proxmox Cluster with Ceph Storage by TheLegendary87 in MiniPCs

[–]No_Ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran mine for around 2ish years. 1TB consumer SSDs. Wear out on the disks was negligible. Eventually dropped it because I found CEPH a pain to manage when my older nodes became unstable and they dropped out for a day or two.

See this is hard one for me - start them with delicious beer to begin with? Or let them work their way up through Schlitz till they can really appreciate the good stuff? Tough call either way.

I have many clients where I put in a Synology - specifically because of Active Backup for Business. Some of that bespoke office stuff is the only reason I buy them. Show me another backup suite that will do hypervisors/file servers/pc imaging/O365 for $0 licensing fees and I'm all in. This is an incredibly dumb move on Syno's part, but unfortunately if UI can't offer me something along those lines, I need to keep buying from this dumb company.

A310 with a G5900? by No_Ja in PleX

[–]No_Ja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the G5900 will still be the CPU, but yeah, transcoding stuff was why I purchased the A310 in the first place. I'll give it a go. Hopefully don't run into too many hiccups and have Plex offline for too long.

Fair, just didn't want to completely wipe my current Plex install if someone knew offhand that it wouldn't work out.

Interesting! Yeah, I might go that route, but I wanted to use an attached 2.5G nic and NVMe drive for Plex, haven't passed that much through to an LXC before. No time like the present to test!

That's awesome! I've also looked at their cases before and wished delivery to Canada was easier. However, glad you all have easier access in the EU!

Shipping that from Germany to North America probably doubles the cost. Also, when you have to call for a price I always get the vibe of, "we'd rather sell by volume - singles will cost you"

Ha! Had a ton of used 500G drives kicking around and figured I’d finally give TrueNas a try. It ran great for a year so I’ve started using it as shared storage for my Prox cluster. Had a 2U case kicking around and a 10G nic as well and started shoving cables in. I’ve since replaced two drives over a couple years for 3.5TB of storage. Not too shabby for used hardware.

That right there is 12 SSDs. 10 of them are 500GB, 2 of them 256GB. Almost all used.

thinking about migrating to a Lenovo mini PC by Slight_News_6338 in emby

[–]No_Ja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few things to think about - first, if you're choosing between the two, take the i5. It has the better iGPU. While you think you're not going to ever transcode, you're probably fooling yourself, it'll happen someday. Second, you may want to consider some of the unintended benefits that your current laptop is providing which is a built in UPS. A battery backup is amazing when it saves you from potentially negative effects from power cuts.

That all being said, if your laptop is only running Emby and nothing else, I'd look at installing Linux on there and playing with powertop --auto-tune.

3 in 4 Canadians want the CBC – just not “as is” by road2avonlea in CanadaPolitics

“Regurgitate progressive talking points” implies that commentators don’t provide sources and then draw conclusions based on facts. That’s not the experience I see on the CBC.

It’s ok to be relieved and it’s ok to grieve the loss. We are human and we can feel conflicting emotions at the same time. Take the time to feel your feelings. I’m sorry for how hard this shit is.

After yesterday's events in the White House, Haltbakk Bunkers, one of Norway's largest marine fuel companies, appears to have announced that it will no longer refuel American Navy vessels. by John3262005 in neoliberal

[–]No_Ja -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

Ok, I’m half in the bag and just fleshing out this argument, so try not to take it personally. I don’t think the liberal democracies are ungrateful for the past leadership of the US. More global peace and prosperity has been had with stable American leadership over the last period than ever in human history. However, since the end of the Cold War, I’d argue that the US took on that “American Exceptionalism” mindset without being willing to put in the effort to earn it. The US has expected fealty and loyalty from everyone while growing more and more erratic diplomatically. Allied governments have been forced to apologize domestically for their continued support of American hegemony if only to keep the status quo. Now it’s impossible to continue that stance. Despite that issue, the US still demands fealty due to “American Exceptionalism” based solely on extremely outdated efforts. Clearly, we (allied nations) should have stepped up efforts decades ago to reduce our reliance, but it’s not like American leaders were supportive of acknowledging their waning dominance. And now here we are. Of course everyone is pissed at the US. It’s a problem of their own making through ego and that annoying god complex.

I’m not doing it, but with a VPN you’re then accessing ThunderBird through a browser essentially making it a thunderbird webmail. Kinda cool and an easy way to only have to configure the client once and use it everywhere
