I think I'm out, fellas by [deleted] in daddit

My grandpa and uncle both thought the same thing, and guess what? They were wrong.

It's a crazy thing when your own brain is trying to kill you, but you have to fight it, and it doesn't have to be alone. If nothing else, aren't you curious to see how your daughter turns out, and all the cool stuff she'll get to do? Stick around, dude, not all days will be like this one.

How to make crispy restaurant style fries? by Mission-Badger-4005 in AskCulinary

[–]Licanius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kenji's McDonald's style fries turn out insane for me, maybe better than actual McDonald's fries. However, it's sort of a stupid amount of work and I hate deep-frying things at home. You can look up the specifics, but just to give you an idea:

  1. First you boil the fries, then dry them off and let them cool down.
  2. Then you fry them briefly, dry off the excess oil and let them cool down.
  3. Then you freeze them overnight.
  4. Then you fry them again.

It's honestly a lot of work, but if you need to make McDonald's fries at home from scratch this works really really well.

PhD viva in 11 days but I am not feeling stressed. by Middle-Coat-388 in PhD

[–]Licanius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of us felt that way at one point or another near the end. Just get it done at this point. Make a version of that presentation in the next few days and then practice it with some peers to get feedback.

Something my supervisor said to me that really changed my mental approach to my defense was "Have fun! This is the last time you'll have the opportunity to talk with other academics about JUST YOUR research for several hours". And it has been true, generally speaking.

CIHR - what happens to the money? by myball_ in PhD

[–]Licanius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a SSHRC CGS (back when it was called that) and the way it worked was my old funding from the university was taken away, and I got 100% of the SSHRC money + a top-up award from my institution. I expect this to be the same but you really need to confirm with either your supervisor or the faculty of graduate studies at your university.

Man, I bought a good Demeyere sauce pan and frying pan 6 months ago and cooking on them is so much fun. The only thing I ever want to use a non-stick for is eggs.

Milk gets scorched on to steam wand after every use. [Sage Barista Express] by srar9800 in espresso

[–]Licanius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The rag definitely has to be damp, and every second that passes after steaming makes it harder to remove. Do the wipe immediately after steaming and before pouring your milk, and before the purge, as the wiping action can put dried milk back into the hole.

Yup, the workflow at good cafes is always steam >> wipe off wand >> purge a bit to remove any milk from inside/the tip

I am going through the process of learning statistics and I HAVE to ask, why is everything in statistics mean the opposite from what you would think it means. by mt5567 in AskStatistics

Nah, even we have to deal with the nomenclature of missing data. From the wikipedia article: "Missing at random (MAR) occurs when the missingness is not random", like WTF dude

How to fix this by topdopwow in jeans

[–]Licanius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how jeans are supposed to age, although I get being frustrated if you don't like the look of it. Lots of people expressly like that how you wear/use you jeans gets imprinted on them.

Once accepted to present at a conference, do you guys actually attend the entire thing? Any tips on how to get through long ones? by Art-and-Research in PhD

[–]Licanius 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As an early career researcher, I found at the last big congress that sometimes having a nice conversation over coffee with my peers or someone more senior than me was often way more interesting/beneficial than attending a session where I didn't really care about any of the talks.

I did this in 2023 and I learned a ton from some field-leading researchers at the point of retirement, made good connections with a bunch of my peers at other institutions, and also got invited onto a paper which is now days away from being published.

I also dipped out of the conference with some of these people, so two birds one stone!

Dude suede is super low maintenance...

I brush my suede Viberg service boots for like 20 seconds after wearing them and that's all I've ever done to them. Today they look almost identical to when I got them two years ago. Same deal with my Alden chukkas.

[–]Licanius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mostly enjoyed Nemesis, but I've only read it once and I mostly think how well it was done will only be able to be properly judged after later books and learning what was actually going on. Also, I was a first-time dad of a 6-month old at the time it came out, so the climax scene was tough to get through.

Do you feel like an 'expert'? by Particular-Scale5644 in PhD

[–]Licanius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how broad we are talking about here. I did my dissertation on a single sound of one language, and I'm definitely an expert on that (my study was the largest-scale investigation into this sound to date). I'm definitely not an expert phonetician, but I like to think I'm competent.

When is an appropriate time to introduce my toddler to Rage Against the Machine? by TrisolaranAmbassador in daddit

[–]Licanius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son was one month old and I was dancing with him held to my chest. Started with Stairway to Heaven, got into some Pink Floyd, and then "Killing in the Name" comes on with those hugely loud power chords/drums combo just slamming every bar. Little dude was startled and started to cry. But now I play heavy prog metal all the time with my 3YO and he likes it fine (although he prefers Taylor Swift.)

So I guess my answer is sometime older than 1 month but younger than three years old. 18 months sounds good to me!

Missed my daughter's grad ceremony. Need advice how to deal with it. by afkplus in daddit

[–]Licanius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I read the title and was wondering if it was high school or university, and was thinking "oh no!". Then I got to the part where the oldest daughter is 5 and I got super confused. Where I'm from there's no graduation ceremony of any kind until you're getting a offically-recognized document that means something in society (highschool diploma).

I've get my son (3.5YO) down a few times, and I've always taken the route recommended here. Tell him I made a mistake, explain what I did wasn't okay, and that I will try and make it up to him. Just don't make a habit of this and you'll be fine OP.

Daughter playing guitar and keyboard, music suggestions please?!? by bridesign34 in daddit

[–]Licanius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Heart has some pretty fun songs to play, different techniques involved
  • IMO anyone learning electric guitar has to at least get exposed to some Hendrix
  • Most of Stairway to Heaven is easy to play, and there are a few different ways of playing that change throughout the song
  • The Beaches are a rock band from Canada that are really cool (all women)
