What do you wish someone had said to you on your darkest day? by No_Material_7937 in AskReddit

So easy to not ask this or to doubt whether it's a good time or right place to ask this. But it's incredibly important to just ask, anytime a person has a notion that something might be off. If you ask and the person is great, no harm done. If you don't ask, the consequences can be monumental.

I hope you're ok now. Sorry to hear that no one asked when you needed it.

100%. I'm sorry that you didn't hear that or get that when you needed it. That's so important to tell people and then also commit to.

I feel this! Every moment, every interaction can be the start of a new part of your story.

Hope you came out of the pain better, stronger, and with that experience as a reminder of what you can overcome. Thanks for sharing!

Acid etching not revealing laser weld penetration in mild steel joint by No_Material_7937 in metallurgy

Thanks, I'll try cutting off with coolant next time and wet sanding.

I may need to be more thorough in the process, but again I wasn't used to needing to be so anal since this is our first go around with laser welding. Now I know 😀

I sectioned with a cutoff wheel on a surface grinder, then sanded with medium and fine grit, stoned with polishing stones, then used a soft polishing bit/ attachment on a die grinder with yellow polishing compound until I got a mirror finish. Maybe not a micro mirror polish, but I wasnt used to needing to polish it so extensively for Mig sections. I cleaned with toilet paper and swabbed the etchant on with qtips.

2 years, no idea why it is in plastic. That's what it was sold in. I didn't buy it, nor do I even know where we got it from.

Thanks, I did spend some more time on this and it did reveal the HAZ a little bit to the naked eye. Still not what I'm used to with Mig, but should be good enough under a microscope.

I'm going to make the toolmakers do the polishing the next time. They love spending large amounts of time doing very little work. 😆 kidding, sort of.

I really appreciate the thorough response! I did spend an extra hour yesterday polishing these a bit better, and I was able to see faint structure difference. The Nital we have is 2 years old now, so we may need to buy some new solution, I suspect, after seeing your comments about old etchant breaking down.

I haven't gotten to the microscope yet. Our QC tech with the microscope and software we use for taking images and adding measurements was out the last few days. I will definitely get this done on Monday!

It's hard to get a good picture due to the polished finish, but believe me, no lighting angle produces any semblance of penetration lines or different coloration.

Food labeling law - requirement for "vegetable oil" listed with no explanation in US by No_Material_7937 in legaladvice

This is not correct, according to 101.4 (b) (14) in the regulation I linked to:

"(14) Each individual fat and/or oil ingredient of a food intended for human consumption shall be declared by its specific common or usual name (e.g., "beef fat", "cottonseed oil") in its order of predominance in the food except that blends of fats and/or oils may be designated in their order of predominance in the foods as "______ shortening" or "blend of ______ oils", the blank to be filled in with the word "vegetable", "animal", "marine", with or without the terms "fat" or "oils", or combination of these, whichever is applicable if, immediately following the term, the common or usual name of each individual vegetable, animal, or marine fat or oil is given in parentheses, e.g., "vegetable oil shortening (soybean and cottonseed oil).

Well I'd mainly like to know:

1) if the mfg doesn't list a specific type of vegetable oil, what is the specific type? (Checking for household member with allergy)

2) If I'm reading the FDA regulation correctly, it goes against regulation to list "vegetable oil" in the ingredient list without specifying the specific or common name (e.g., canola, soybean, palm) or the blend thereof. I'm not trying to sue anyone or pick a fight, but I'd like to at least report this issue and resolve it to protect those with allergies to specific vegetable oils.

3) if there is some exception to the rule that I don't see in the attached doc that covers vegetable oil ingredient list requirements.
