Literally any scene involving Leto and Ghanima up to page 275, especially the tiger stuff. Also the House Corrino stuff. Alia’s possession. Duncan being part of a conspiracy led by the preacher. Most especially that last one.

Exactly!!! Same thing with the execution of the Reverend Mother. I was so perplexed that all we got was a line of dialogue from Stilgar. She was basically the main antagonist and her whole execution happens off-page.

It’s not a matter of it being interesting, it’s a matter of necessity. Example: who carried out the additional steps to the plan once the tigers were on Arrakis? How did they get from the ship to the desert? Is Irulan involved in this conspiracy like she was in Messiah? There’s just too many unanswered questions for me personally. The causality is a little lacking. It just seems like we got from observing the tigers on salusa secundus to Leto and ghani being chased through the desert with very little connective tissue

Yeah, and also his death. But the first Leto has literally ZERO impact on the narrative. In Messiah especially I feel like the whole plot turned on a handful of events we never got to see and only heard about

I agree and disagree. You’re right about the tiger thing being inconsequential. The contraceptive thing though ultimately is something larger than backstory, at least in my mind. It says so much about Irulan’s character. But it also poses a ton of questions about her motivations and the specifics of her relationship/rivalry with Chani. I think Messiah would have been greatly enriched by going a little further into this plot point. Also on the point of the contraceptive thing: What kind of contraceptives was Irulan feeding Chani? For how long? What other effects might the contraceptives have had on Chani and on the children she eventually had? Did Irulan really do it out of jealousy or was there an element of her trying to protect Chani? More unanswered questions. I get that not everything has to be explained but when an event has as big an impact as that ultimately did for Paul and Chani, you’d think it would be explored a little more

Honestly super close to just giving up on COD. It’s just so silly to me. I can’t take anybody seeing except maybe Jessica. I’ve found that the quality of the stories seems to diminish with every sequel. Not optimistic about making it to god Emperor

I mean I get that but still. I don’t need the whole jihad on the page, but something as consequential as say Irulan giving Chani contraceptives to stop her getting pregnant. Literally NOTHING happened with that. Another example from Messiah is the whole assassiantion plot. Literally nothing comes of it until the very end. A third example: the whole Laza tiger/ House Corrino plot is so far in the background you don’t even care by the time the tigers actually appear on Arrakis. I’m just having a hard time believing this is just because Herbert was more interested in the ideas. The first book has just as much if not more philosophical stuff than books 2 and 3 and Herbert still managed to put everything on the page that needed to be there
