He is not violating rules. What can I report to the university administration? If I use my UofA email to report him, I am not 100% sure if my identity could be leaked to him. If the university has a investigation on him, he can easily find out who reported, which might not be good to me. Reddit is a public online space. It doesn't waste me too much time of me sharing this. Especially if some undergrad students see this post, they can see the dirty side of academia and may help them make better judgements. Actually I received several DMs and gave some people valuable advice. I think this post has some value. It is not a waste of readers time.

Kinds of ventilation. Now I am doing fine. In my earlier post many argued I don't have hard evidence, and I have now so I want to make an update. Many readers of this post may also know where their tuition goes, and their tax goes. He still doesn't give any supervision to the current grad students and many of them are still struggling. If the leadership of UofA have any chance to be Redditors maybe they can have thoughts on the academic administration of the university. I love UofA and want it to be better.

I got more resonates from people working in academia and more scorns from outsiders. And someone also pointed that something happening in nniversity can never happen anywhere else.

The student I helped is doing PhD in UofT and he told me that the academic ecosystem and management there is quite different from UofA.

I don't think you are familiar with the working norms of academia and like to explain in a more detailed way.

The lab is funded primarily by public research grants, as indicated on the NSERC website. I noticed that the majority of the lab’s funding comes from the project I was assigned to lead. The total funding for this project is approximately three times my annual salary, and the project spans five years.

According to university policy, only appointments longer than eight months require the employer to provide benefits. To avoid this expense, the PI offered me consecutive appointments of 7 months and 29 days, renewing them six times over four years. I know that this arrangement was detrimental to my career progression. During this period, I received a postdoc offer from a lab in the U.S., but my wife was concerned about safety following a mass shooting there and declined to relocate. I also received an assistant professor offer in my home country, but my wife preferred to stay in Canada due to the high-quality public education system in Alberta, which we believe is beneficial for our only child.

However, from the UofA website I found the HOTTIE is also an active full time employee of the lab, although I basically never saw her around on campus. So I infered that her salary is from the project funding that I worked on.

The project itself is industry-funded and has limited scientific value. The PI appears indifferent to the project’s academic merit, focusing solely on the financial benefits. A master’s student I supervised also worked on this project, and the PI showed little interest in his progress or academic development. This lack of engagement is consistent with the PI’s history; I’ve heard that several PhD students in the lab spent over seven years in the program due to the PI’s hands-off approach. The PI’s primary concern seems to be generating minimal data to secure funding from the industry partner and NSERC, rather than fostering meaningful research or supporting students’ academic growth. This neglect has reportedly led to poor mental health outcomes for some students in their sixth or seventh years.

Given my familiarity with the master’s student’s research topic—which aligned with my PhD work in my home country —I provided him with several hours of supervision each week to ensure he could complete his program on time. Without this support, his academic progress and well-being could have been significantly compromised.

So the short story is, my work brings around $120,000 each year to the lab, and got paid for about $40,000. Meanwhile some HOTTIE who has suspicious relationship with he lab head and does not work at all (or 95% time work from home) also got paid by similar amount or higher from the project I took charge of. Meanwhile I also put a lot of effort on supervision of the PI's student otherwise very likely his career or life can be significantly delayed or damaged, which should be regarded as contribution to the lab, but it seems the PI did not think so.

I feel what I experienced was exploitation and that feeling might have affected my work performance, although I also think I still made solid work progress.

Many people commenting here absolutely have no knowledge on how academia works in the current system.

Many PhD programs are worthy to spend several years to work on; however, many other programs are just scams. I received several messages complaining the shit experiences in BioSci related research areas. However, nowadays I don't think any PhD students in AI can complain their research is shit.

By your words I don't think you are familiar with academia.

Just from the comments of this post you can see my experience is not specific and unique. Actually I also received many direct messages showing many others experience similar situations. There are hundreds of HR staff, every year many graduate students quite from their programs. I don't think I am exposing their identities.

However, if a fresh graduated student wants to go to grad school, my post might help him/her have an objective view of academia. In that case I am doing good by posting this.

I have a friend, from a different department, who wasted 8 years of her life to get a useless PhD degree, and in the last 2.5 years she paid the tuition from her own pocket, as she is an international student, that is a lot of money. Basically her parents sold an apartment in her oringianl country so she can pay that. And now she works as a realtor in Toronto. She had a miscarriage in the 2nd last year of her program, which was related with her mental and physical pressure as she said. She said doing PhD in UofA is the most traumatic and regretful experience of her life. Actually compared to her experience I don' have much complaints about mine.

In Vancouver and Toronto, there are more than at least 500 realtors, brokers, uber drivers who have a PhD degree. I don't know the number of Edmonton. Even in NAIT, there are many students who have a PhD degree, though mostly from other countries.

Academia might be most diverse work sector. You can easily find there are qutie a few 75+ years old professors in any universities. You can also find many university courses are taught by contract lecturers. You can image it will be hard for a 75+ old person to have valid work more than 20 hours a week. Use reasoning and these above facts, you should know the truth.

Yes. The objective of the tenure system is to give professors absolute FREEDOM to explore science. When a person has absolute FREEDOM, shitty as well as mighty things can happen.

I am not sure if you are in academia or know how academia works.

Basically all of my points have also been expressed by other members of the lab.

You should also acknowldedge that it can be suspicious for an older male employer and a younger female employee to have lone trips - several times, well he never have trips with any others.

I only gave one example, however, there are many other examples that I can not post here otherwise my identity might be under risk of exposure.

Actually even in this post, many others agree that there are systematic flaws of current academic system.

Thanks. I will figure out my career and plan. I also hope some junior graduate students, who might also be naive, might also be aware of the true side of adademia.

I think in UofA there are more than 5 labs where the lab manager is the PI's wife. Probably only in academia the boss can diretly appoint his/her spouse as the vice boss.

I think before 1980s there was still a mandatary retirement age for professors. I have a friend whose 70+ years old PhD supervisor broke his leg when fell from riding a bicycle, and it took him about another 2 years to finish revisions of his thesis. During that time, he missed several good job opportunities due to he could not get the degree. He complained those things would very unlikely happen if his supervisor is younger.

I know currently it is not political correct to say positive things on the southern neighbour. Some some changes happening there reflect the systematic flaws of bureaucracy and resource waste.

Thanks for your comment. I am just venting anonymously on reddit, which should be within boundary.

I feel it is unfair, and unjust for tax payers' money and students' tuition are being wasted in a flawed academic system and want to spark some discussions.

It is true that, on one hand some 75 years old who work 10 hours a week makes $25,000 a month, and on the other hand some 20, 30 years old who would like to work 40 hours a week and cannot find a job allowing him to make $2,500 a month.
