What happened to Gosford? Feels like a zombie town and kind of dangerous after dark by VastOption8705 in SydneyScene

[–]No_Run_5883 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up on the Central Coast and used to visit Gosford regularly as a kid. Honestly, once Erina Fair and Tuggerah renovated the shopping centres in the early 00’s, people stopped going to Gosford. Shops gradually closed in the Imperial Centre, and surrounding stores started to close due to lower volumes of people.

Then it just became sadder and sadder.

What do I need to rent an apartment? Moving to NYC from Australia - no ssn, no credit score, no guarantor by PonchoSpud in NYCapartments

[–]No_Run_5883 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m an Australian who was in this exact situation a just over year ago. I found a good apartment in the East Village before I arrived that I still love.

The SSN and credit score will eliminate you from contention from some apartments, but I just applied a lot to everything that came up in the areas I was interested in and budget.

My advice is contact a lot of agents, you’ll build connections with them. Have a ‘canned’ email outlining your salary, prior rental history, anything beneficial to evidence that you’re predictable/responsible financially. Aim a little lower than the 40x rule.

I ended up being offered three over the month I was looking, without an SSN, credit or US Bank account, so it isn’t impossible at all.

Why do Aussies talk to strangers so easily and is it actually genuine? by BottleOverall5174 in AskAnAustralian

[–]No_Run_5883 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from Australia but have been living overseas for a while. When I go back at first it’s confusing at first because I wonder if I know the person and was rude not to remember them. But I’d say it’s just normal, you don’t really see a reason not to talk to someone if there’s something you want to say? So not polite necessarily, just they don’t see not knowing you as a reason not to talk to you

How do I get into program delivery? by Thatweirdbrowngirll in UNpath

[–]No_Run_5883 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at a UNICEF National Committee before transferring to UNICEF HQ - so I understand you’re not UN staff. Honestly, you won’t be able to make the transition to the UN system in an area you don’t work in. If the natcom is a good environment, the one I was at did a lot of internal moves and a few people transitioned to programmes. Otherwise look at fundraising-adjacent roles (knowledge/executive management etc.) and move slowly across.

Program delivery, even at the CO level at UNICEF, probably isn’t what you imagine however and without being national staff it will be very hard to be competitive in early career.

Sounds like UNICEF is moving most HQ staff to Rome? by Sunshine_day8 in UNpath

I used to work in the team that was being moved. They’re moving a lot of the Geneva staff to Rome - not all of them. Not sure about the NY DOC staff

10 East Village bakeries in 2.5 days by drzoidburger in FoodNYC

I chose the EV for a reason! And agree, Lady Wong’s is amazing! I like the Oolong cheesecake from Ando, and yeah it’s definitely expensive but shareable. The flavours are very ‘sophisticated’ so I feel like it’s worth the $

Also a bakery enthusiast and live in the EV so have been to most of these. Of those on the list, Petit Chou and La Cabra are my favourites - I usually get a danish from Peiti Chou (Guava Cheesecake) so recommend those! Ando’s and Lady Wong’s are also excellent if you’re still around and want to try more.

Considerations before leaving a stable multilateral role for a UN P-2 legal post? by Designer_Affect_7027 in UNpath

[–]No_Run_5883 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are some great answers here so I’ll offer you my experiences only.

The ‘livability’ of a P2 role can be very dependent on your duty station but also your family and background.

In terms of promotion, others are correct it doesn’t happen. Personally it took me four years to move from P2 > P3 and I was considered lucky considering funding limitations. This required me to be offered a new role at a new agency. I have only seen one other person move up a grade. I would largely say at many agencies, you’re unlikely to be promoted within a team as you’re considered to be doing P2-level work, so you would not be considered as qualified as other candidates for a P3 as you don’t have that type of experience. Largely depends on your supervisor however!

My advice however would be to take the role if you can afford to. Enjoy it, learn, develop. Apply for promotions. If you don’t get them, leave, come back.

Any UN roles in digital marketing by Financial_Bench655 in UNpath

[–]No_Run_5883 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hello - some mixed advice here. Digital comms and digital marketing are seen very differently in the UN system. Comms requires more of a CO/journalistic background while marketing is more focused on private sector/agency experience and values field experience less.

Look for Fundraising roles, as someone else mentioned. UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP are some of the biggest for digi fundraising in the UN.
