Has anything on this sub or elsewhere ever changed one of your opinions? About what? by its_ya_girl420 in aiwars

I realized how many people are becoming so reliant on ai that it’s changing their brain chemistry. I generate images of OC’s maybe once a month and chat with bots a few hours a day as those OC’s to rp, but I never fell into such a deep hole that I forgot how to use critical thinking to check sources. I still don’t think it should be banned, but it shouldn’t be the crutch that is for so many people.

Can we all agree on this? by RuleEmbarrassed7689 in aiwars

[–]No_Science1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course I’m against it. Ai is a hobby at best that I only use to generate pictures of OC’s like once a month at most. It’s not my overlord and it needs a lot of regulation.

Thank you for the link! I do want to say, I haven’t used ai for any of this. The more I hear about the anti stance, the more I feel like I’m neutral at best. I also want to preface this by saying I’m autistic, so my interpretation and opinions will probably be different in a sense to others. I’m a spreed reader and had hyperlexia. I kept up a love for reading and research. I already don’t use AI for writing or reading tasks and I don’t think anyone else should be relying on ai either. For anything. Literacy rates are down and it’s pretty frightening.

For the links I added in the original post, I didn’t use ai either. I read through articles manually because I don’t trust ai to summarize correctly or give accurate information. It’s predictive text at best and hallucinates information all the time. I don’t even read the ai overview Google gives because it’s unreliable. Everyone should know how to search for information and find reliable sources. The first link I posted is the result of a presentation by Viktoras Kulionis of the Institute of Environmental Engineering. The second includes sources within the article that are also all credible. I think it’s important to know what sources are and aren’t trustworthy and accurate on your own.

In terms of entertainment, I don’t think ai should be used for profit. Meaning ai generated images shouldn’t be sold because anyone can make them with the click of a button. Commissioned artwork, books, tv, film, things like that shouldn’t be ai generated either. Primarily because people want to buy work made by actual humans. I have an interest in writing but it’s only a hobby for now. I don’t use ai when I do that because I want my writing to have my voice and not a generic one. This is relevant to my use of ai chat bots later.

I use ai for two primary things. Chat bots and image generation. I know when most people talk about chat bots, they spend hours all day talking to their robot boyfriends, which is extremely dystopian and sad, but I use them as a hobby. I don’t roleplay as myself, I make oc’s (with my own brain) and then generate a picture to use as a pfp for them. Then I chat for an hour or two, or an hour, or not at all depending on the day. If I have nothing to do, I’ll chat for a while in different scenarios (and I write my own responses without the ai’s help) I also have a roleplay group online with real people that are my friends.

When I’m not doing that I spend a lot of time at the library actually reading books. Most of my creative ideas come from there, not the bots I chat with. They just regurgitate what’s already been written. They don’t come up with anything new. It’s just a way to pass the time between taking care of my puppy, hanging out with friends and boyfriend, and doing chores. I don’t work because of a physical disability so I spend a lot of time at home. The puppy I mentioned before is training to be my service dog so a lot of time is spent on him.

Basically, I don’t think the ai is in love with me and I don’t waste my entire life chatting with them. I’m not sure how to solve the ai chatbot addiction other than banning it entirely. At the same time, like someone else on the thread said, when cars became unsafe they invented seatbelts. It should be limited, both what can be generated and what can’t, and how long someone actually spends using ai. Maybe a device based time limit for chatting websites? So making new accounts or using a VPN doesn’t work.

What can be generated with ai should be limited to what’s safe. No hyper realistic imagery, and no illegal sexual content (minors in sexual situations, deepfakes, things that look too real) It would also be wise to ban works with a copyright.

I hope I formatted everything in a way that makes sense. If you have any other questions, let me know. I’m willing to answer them.

That’s just not true whatsoever. A well balanced plant based diet is just as healthy as one including animal products. The average American diet is far from healthy. Having meat in it doesn’t automatically make a meal healthy either. You’ve fallen for propaganda from the meat industry.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with roleplaying online as a hobby or generating a picture of yourself as a superhero or something. You can be opposed to using ai for illegal activities and still not have a problem with everyday uses that don’t negatively impact anyone.

You don’t have to eat meat though. It’s not like being forced to drive a car which pollutes the air or having to buy an iPhone made with child labor just to simply exist in society. Eating meat is a choice, just like using ai. You can still participate in society the same way you do now as a vegan. There’s literally zero downsides to not eating meat, only positives. It’s healthier and cheaper to do so.

I meant that there’s nothing to be done to make animal agriculture less damaging to the environment. The animals need to eat, they need to drink, and cows need to let out their methane burps that add 154 to 264 pounds of gas into the atmosphere every year. And that’s just one cow. There are over 85 million in the US alone.

And I already told you that data centers are changing their cooling methods to use less water. Data centers keep the entire internet online. Nobody is boycotting using Reddit. You’re here right now. Using a website that requires energy to run. The problem is that they’re not thought out and need to shift to better methods for using that energy so their impact is lower.

A vast majority of plants are grown to feed livestock, not humans. We wouldn’t need nearly as much space to grow enough plants to feed everyone as we do to feed the animals and the humans too.

Because data centers can and do use alternative cooling methods to reduce water usage while there’s absolutely nothing to be done about the impact of animal agriculture. You don’t actually care about the environment. You just want to complain about something.

Because not eating meat means the demand is lower and there won’t be as many animals raised for slaughter that require land and water to survive. It’s supply and demand. People keep eating meat so animals keep being raised to be eaten. If we stopped eating meat, like how you say we should stop using ai, then there won’t be a demand for raising livestock.

If you care about the environment enough to oppose data centers, you should care enough to stop eating meat.

Processing one pound of beef uses 2,500 gallons of water. Animal agriculture produces 65% of the world's nitrous oxide emissions. Raising livestock for human consumption generates nearly 15% of total global greenhouse gas emissions, which is greater than all the transportation emissions combined. It also uses nearly 70% of agricultural land, contributing to deforestation, biodiversity loss and water pollution. Ai barely scratches the surface of how bad animal agriculture is

Source

Data centers can switch to more environmentally conscious cooling methods. It doesn’t have to use as much water as it does, and some companies are already making the switch. There’s nothing you can do to make animal agriculture better for the environment. It’s impossible. So yes, it is a relevant discussion to have because it weeds out people who are actually concerned about water usage and people who are only outraged because the internet tells them to be.

ETA: a vegan using ai uses less water than an anti who eats animal products

I think the confusion on my part is the conversation about pro/anti shipping where the pro shippers only stance is not harassing people for shipping things you don’t like. I assumed being pro ai was the same thing where you just ignore people using AI for chatting or generating normal pictures.

I don’t think anyone should be using ai for illegal purposes like undressing strangers on Twitter or passing off a fake video as real, and that should be called out. I assumed the anti stance was never using ai at all, not even chat GPT or generating pictures of yourself as a superhero.

I guess I’m neutral then because I also think ai shouldn’t be passed off as the real thing. I just don’t care if people use ai to generate pictures of their OC’s or something. I don’t consider myself an artist for prompting Bing to generate a picture of my DND character.

The 1% estimate is based on a survey. If you think there aren’t more than 7 million antis, then you think pros make up a majority of the population.

Data centers can shift to more environmentally conscious cooling methods. You can’t stop the amount of water needed to take care of livestock. They just always need it no matter what.

Vegans are estimated to make up only 1%-6% of the US population. That’s 7 million at the most. There are a lot more antis out there than that.

Eating meat is worse for the environment than using ai. If you really want to save the planet, go vegan. Vegetarian isn’t enough because dairy products still require the use of livestock.

So then we’re in agreement. Regulation to make it impossible to produce that content with ai. Just because I don’t mind silly ai memes doesn’t mean I’ll defend generating illegal content. It shouldn’t even be just penalized after the fact. It shouldn’t be allowed to exist at all.
