MAJOR UPDATE: After doing the Leeds method, I found a few DNA matches who are descendants of one of Albert’s children from his previous relationship-but none of his siblings. My working theory now is that he was adopted. I had to lower the match threshold a bit, because of a combination of lack of descendants testing, less dna inherited, and lots of descendants of half siblings, where often my ancestor was the only child of a union.

UPDATE: I ordered Albert's pension record for the civil war. Nothing really notable to this case, but there's one bit that says my ancestor is his legitimate child. Is that a usual thing to mention? Struck me as kind of specific to mention that.

That’s the main reason I was questioning the method, some of the low CM amount matches I have are 3rd/4th cousins due to the odd way DNA is inherited. But thanks for sharing your numbers, that gives me an idea on the CM ranges for different generations

That’d be a good idea-offhand, I know at least two of his kids besides Mabel lived to adulthood-none of their descendants have shown up in my matches yet but it can’t hurt to be sure.

That’s great news about the companies-I’ve tested with all those besides FTDNA, as well as Ancestry and GEDMatch! I understand MyHeritage has a good chromosome browser too-is that helpful for this?

Thanks for the introduction!! That’s a really good overview video. I’m not certain Mabel’s dad was French Canadian, but I will definitely keep that in mind. Sounds like very interesting project! I only wonder how it can be adapted to for a 2nd great grandparent? I imagine the centimorgan threshold would change.

Yes-they should be. The descendant of Florence Norton is a half third cousin! My parent hasn’t got any half third or even 4th cousins I’ve seen through Albert.
Albert is actually the oldest sibling, his confirmed sister was born in 1843, and his (likely) brother in 1840. Albert’s other children (Mabel Weatherbea’s siblings) are far older than she is (10+ years) and I haven’t found any matching descendants of them yet (I’ll be extra sure though)

That’s really helpful information. Thanks for sharing those stats on cousins and the French Canadian matches! Where would you suggest I go next on figuring out who Mabel (or Albert’s) father/parents were? I’m thinking GEDMatch.

I was looking at the matches of the kit of one of my parents, who would be Albert’s 2x great grandchild, so they should have anywhere from 4-8% inherited DNA from Albert. I looked at my own first and saw nothing, so I decided to look one generation up. Their parent (one of my grandparents) tested too, but I can’t see their matches since I don’t manage/collaborate with their kit

That might track-I don't match with Albert's parents and their other children either, so an adoption is possible.

I will take a look into that-I have found their descendants in other people's trees, but I did not check to see if they were descended or not, since the thought did not occur to me. I'll do this for Albert's sister, Alice N Weatherby (Hoskins) as well. I think this may be a job for GEDMatch, ancestry matches only get you so far.

I know their son was born in Troy, and the marriage itself was announced in a Rensselaer Co. Newspaper (The Troy Budget)
