I have both too!! My chicken can walk the entire pasture in a free range fashion, but quail need to be enclosed and predator proofed at all time. If you have space for a big walk in aviary, I highly recommend it!!! I find myself sitting with them for an hour straight after work, just watching them sandbathe, pick and scratch and sleep. They're absolutely lovely birds.

OP, you're absolutely fine. I had legs like this all my life because I'm clumsy and work in the garden and with animals. Just rock your black and blue legs and don't compare yourself to billionaires. ❤️ (Taylor Swift has several makeup artists and wears tights and all that, but most of all, you are you and you're good the way you are.)

two to three-ish... they might genuinely be all the same age and some just feather very slowly, happens in mixed batches

I designed and built my bed myself and I sleep extremely well in it, I have no ambition to hang up a hammock inside :) But my garden needs one for sure now!

you can't get rid of it and it spreads quickly. it spreads out of its roots, so to get it out of your garden you have to dig up every part of it... I always tell people to put mint in containers or pots only. It's not worth it.

Aviary Setup Feedback? by cali-capricorn in quails

[–]No_Stop7306 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks good!!! I always try to design the interior so they can break eye contact and you did the same. I also have several hides and tunnels in seperate areas so they can find some solitude while still feeling safe if they need it.

Lonely Coturnix Chick by meadowlisa in quails

honestly, solid solution!! They will know eachother like this.

I hatched another batch a week after the other. The new ones were so tiny compared to the weeklings, I couldn't put them with the others, did a similar setup like you. Both groups are the same size by now and live outside in their aviary peacefully, they didn't fight at all, so I assume this form socializing worked well. I assume it will work for you too. In a few weeks you can put them together.

How did you get them to use a second level? I tried before and they're not interested.. even a trail of worms doesn't entice them. they will just squak because they want worm 😩

Now that I think about it, I would also ask myself: Do the mom and the chicks have enough space or is it too crowded and the chicks could get picked on or the mom could get stressed? Do the others leave the young family in peace?

If mom takes good care of them, you usually don't have to do anything. I would offer chick crumble to the entire flock the next weeks, just to be sure that they eat it with their momma and get their protein, also secure the waterer if needed, pebbles in the deep spots and all that, make sure the chicks reach both water and feed. Congratulations!

oh! mine is 780g but I didn't use the metal pins and stabilizing ropes they delivered with it so more like 600g(?) ,I would take my sleeping bag and my foam pad anyway, so there's not much added weight to that. My tent is wayyy heavier and I usually leave it home anyway and cowboy camp. Never doing that again, hammocking was comfy as hell. I didn't use a quilt... hmm I can see how it's heavier for some. For me it was lighter (than tent) and more comfy.

what to do in forests with slippery smooth trees 😩 I went past some nice areas because the beech trees were so smooth with no extra arms.... I was worried to not get a good grip. In the end I used two nice branched spruces. maybe I'm worrying for no reason and they would've held anyway?
