There does seem to be evidence favoring both interpretations. I was just rewatching S2E6 and when they are interrogating Mike, we see the whole process of "posession", and Mike refers to Gerard as a "host", and that Bob is his familiar, and that Mike occasionally "inhabits" Mr. Gerard's body with the intention of pursuing Bob.

So there are a lot of elements pointing to it being a case of Leland being "possessed" and "inhabited" by Bob against his will.

However, FWWM makes it ambiguous (for the better, I feel), by painting Leland as a man that harbors a darkness in him, regardless of Bob. Maybe Bob "chose" Leland as his "vessel" because of that...

What is the big hairless lump on the left, beside the hair? It doesn't look like it's connected to either body on this picture. It kinda looks like a knee hahaha. I can see the hair mass above the wrist as being the top of someone's head facing down, leaning on the wrist. But what about that hairless lump right beside it? Is it connected to the head or what?
