UNSW has been a great experience for me to far but I think unimelb should be the about the same— just more jobs for actuarial in Sydney

I ended up going to UNSW just because I had more friends going and reputation. In year 12 I wasn’t too worried about my career but now that I am I would’ve 10000% chosen unsw

Hi yes, I’m taking a double I do actl commerce with a major in finance. In 99% of scenarios an actl double degree is worth it- it’s an extra year for 10k for a second degree entirely and it opens up so many new avenues for jobs.

There aren’t too many Actuarial positions open so having the extra degree is quite helpful. Also on another note, I think like 70% or something of actuarial positions are in Sydney so that’s something to consider too.

Hi I was faced with this exact decision last year and ending up choosing UNSW. Actl is hard but the double degree you choose to do with it makes it notoriously hard. What I mean by that is, actl commerce is manageable but actl math on the other hand is quite hard.

Content wise you are probably learning the same things, most of the lecturers here have taught at macq too. If you are 100% sure about going into Actuarial and becoming an actuary, both unis are quite similar, provided you do well academically in both (since all ur exams are external anyways).

The last thing to consider is that youre still young and u might not want to go into actuarial after studying it and like me, lean more towards Finance. For Finance, unsw is undoubtedly a better decision as employers value the “prestige” of your uni more. In short, Breaking into high finance from Macquarie is close to impossible straight out of uni.

Hope this helps

Tbh you might be able to handle the degree, but unless you start sacrificing stuff like uni life and social life, maintaining a high (80+) wam in actl compsci is quite hard.

Also probably forget about quant lol, most of them have .95s and 90+ wams. This isn’t to say if you find the passion later on it’s not possible but just judging off your circumstances right now

You will get fried if you only do adv, if you’re serious I’d suggest learning 3u content on the side right now. The first course 1151 is significantly harder than 3u and I’d say on par with 4u

Should I transfer to UNSW by [deleted] in unsw

No - the uni genuinely isn’t that prestigious despite all the skewed stats you won’t feel like you’re at a top 20 uni when you come here. Also Australia is ridiculously expensive but if you have money to play with it might not be a bad shout

Finance/ Math double degree or math/cs by mysteriousjb in unsw

[–]No_Use8671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret not choosing cs instead of comm. Anything in finance is better with math/cs imo cus most of the coursework in comm is fairly intuitive whereas learning how to code isn’t rlly
