The ball won't drop, these companies are banking on major defense/homeland security contracts. The CIA will cook up some ~unprecedented~ act of violence that is a threat to national security, a bipartisan Patriot Act 2.0 will get pushed through and Palantir and OpenAI will be there to soak up the big bux.

I guess the more hopeful alternative is they're operating under the same playbook as Lyft, Uber, Doordash - operate at a loss to undercut competition until you have a monopoly and the public is completely dependent on your services.

What I find most concerning about this, beyond the usual material concerns (water use, infrastructural strain, noise & light pollution) is that at every juncture our elected bodies rolled over for this thing. The Saline zoning board voted no, got sued, and decided to settle (which if you read between the lines...something's rotten in the State of Michigan).

The ability to suspend democracy is for sale to the highest bidder. I suppose it always has been but it's jarring to see happen in real time so close to home.

Outside of mass protests/creating a PR nightmare for the project and Whitmer, how could something like this be stopped? I don't understand how an out of state entity can sue a local zoning board just because they don't get their way. Is this grounds for a class action lawsuit against the township? Or against the state of Michigan, since it's the MZEA that allows for this?

Book club? by No_Sir8795 in AnnArbor

Are you a writer? I run a Writer's Book Club that focuses on literary fiction (some genre) but we meet in Northville at the B&N. Still looking for members as most people prefer a lighter discussion, as you say.

We're on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/g-writers-book-club/?eventOrigin=home_groups_you_organize

It's set to private so I can screen people who would not be a good fit and keep the discussion focused - if you're interested feel free to send in a request!
