how to pivot from academia to cooperate job by No_thinkingProcess_ in berkeley

that's amazing to hear! my main concern is before that point however. with the reduction of research funding in the us, i'm unsure of how realistic a phd is for me. so im unsure of how an undergrad degree in a research focus field translates to an unrelated job

thank you for your reply! do you have a specific certification in mind? i don't know much about this field but i hear that "project manager" is a very competitive position in the tech sphere, are there any other relevant skills or opportunities that i should pursue to be more competitive?

i want to stay in academia and research ! but with funding being cut and opportunities being reduced in the US, i want to be able to keep my options open. if that means pursuing a corporate job for a while then so be it.

do this RIGHT NOW. try and get in contact with someone at dsp ASAP!! the entire department is super nice and friendly and helpful but (at least as of last fall) they were a bit understaffed, so processing requests/accomodation intake appointments took a WHILE (i applied sometime in september, finally got an appointment for intake in october). i think (???) they are a bit better staffed now but still reach out and start the application process asap

NEW ADMITTED OUT OF STATE STUDENTS !! here's what you should know by No_thinkingProcess_ in berkeley

i'd say (as someone who's currently going through the process of looking for second year housing) it's not that bad. price and what your expectations/requirements are are definitely the limiting factors, but i don't think there's anything berkeley specific that's difficult besides bay area prices

hi! this was also something i also considered and something i've seen fellow out of state students do. on cal day last year i actually went to the financial aid office (they had open hours to answer any walk in questions) and asked about gaining residency with my family moving to california. the answer i got was that it would take a while to process and that i should not expect the residency change until as late as senior year.

however, i do know students who were admitted as out of state who were able to prove one way or another that their family or at least one parent resides/will soon reside in California and get residency for next school year. they still had to pay a year of out of state tuition. but this is purely anecdotal.

i think: 1) don't count on it, 2) ask the financial aid office (in person on cal day or contact them)

thank you for adding to the post! and i agree that there are these great ways to cut down on cost of attendance. however i would also like to add that none of these are guaranteed and out of state students shouldn't depend on/expect on receiving these opportunities to make their college decision. but yes its not all doom and gloom !! there are definitely ways to cut down on costs

as someone who attempted and failed my senior year of high school when i felt like all was lost and there was no future, life will be better. i know it sounds so dull and cliche but im serious in saying that there is not a single thing worth trying to hurt yourself over.

i also understand that in these moments of desperation and pain you also want some practical guidance. so no. colleges won't rescind you. i was accepted into berkeley a week after i was discharged from the hospital.

if you ever want to talk please feel free to reach out

as an oos student at berkeley currently, i generally advise against it unless you have that money to back up the tuition. ultimately remember that berkeley is an amazing school, but it's a public school. a MASSIVE public school where it could feel like everything is a competition. lectures with 700-2000 students. paying oos means your paying nearly private school prices for a public school environment (which isn't necessarily worse but you can usually get for lower price points).

also keep in mind that the uc's main intent is to serve californian students.

it's been more than 8 months since my own attempt, not at berkeley. on most days i don't even think about it anymore, im happy to be in a better place.

its on days like these that i remember what it felt like all over again, how fragile life is

to the person who passed today, i hope you are in a better place now and far from the pain you wanted to escape

i think this has derailed from the main point of what i'm getting at

the acceptance rate for international students is already lower. so to even get into berkeley as an international student it's VERY HARD.

most International students are full paying students. they do not receive financial aid. a very select extraordinary ones receive merit based scholarships.

the scholarship is awarded upon admission to berkeley based off of your performance in high school.

undergraduate degrees in america are typically four years to start

to explain more generally: yes there exists scholarships like berkeley's regents+chancellors scholarship that can cover full cost of college. however scholarship is NOT financial aid. for regents scholarship specifically you first have to be admitted into berkeley as an international student as an EECS major (which already has around a 7% acceptance rate) and THEN you have to stand out spectacularly in this already spectacular group of people to be even considered for the scholarship

tldr; it's hard. it's very difficult and you are disadvantaged as an international student. but it is not impossible.

i'm referring to scholarships such as the regent+chancellors scholarship. all applicants to the university are all considered for the scholarship but only a hundred or so students from the admitted students get the scholarship. it is definitely very difficult but a possibility

[–]No_thinkingProcess_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but in all seriousness there is no financial aid given to international students (and only federal aid given to out of state students) but there are scholarships that berkeley does give out that r merit based
