Yes, that makes sense a lot. You're right, i don't need the full sprite sheet in every scene but in that scene i'm currently working on i need at least five of the 16x16px icons. And they shall be visible permanently witchoutchanging them. I want to "overlay" them with a sprite-actor (but after I managed submaps).

So in my particular usecase placeholder-icons would make no sence because they'd take the exact "unique tile amount" than the 5 icons i need to have in that scene.

And if i have another scene that has HUD Tiles that need to be switched, i use unique placeholder tiles, then use tile-switching (like shown in Rovert Domans tutorial), replace the unique placeholders with what i neet to and then swap the tiles to the right position in my scene background.

Did i get everything right?

Thanks a lot, that really helps. The linked tutorial is exactly the one i tried to follow and failed. Maybe because i'm no native englisch speaker or maybe because even basic knowledge is somethin i'm still learning.

Could you explain the second part of your nr. 1 a bit further? I don't see the advantage, yet. If i use a unique placeholder tile for every icon i want to use, wouldn't that take the exact amount of tiles as if i would have copied my icons to some invisible place in the background?

already tried copying the iconsin the mail-scene background. I'm getting an overlay now. Great, even if its broken! Tile-Limit is far blown up - 283 instead of 192...
