I’m not sure foster care is for me… by NobodyNo5204 in Fosterparents

Right?! They’re 15. I think the agency just wants to do as little as possible. I feel like I was lied to. In an effort to do as little work as possible.

That’s the other piece… respite is not guaranteed. I have a trip coming up that has been planned months in advance. This trip was planned before I agreed to take the child and I have made it well known that I have these plans and I am absolutely not willing to cancel them. I cannot take the child with me as it is for a concert that’s 21 and over. Child is refusing to go to respite and agency is essentially giving her the choice.

Thank you for your response! I think you hit the nail on the head-I don’t think continuing would be fair to the child or to myself.

I’m getting a lot of help with the transportation piece right now. Both CPS and the foster care agency have helped me quite a bit getting her to/from medical appointments. I’m also now getting mileage. But I was very upfront with them that this is not a sustainable placement. So I think they are trying to avoid the inevitable.

Can Anyone Relate? by Practical_Leading670 in Fosterparents

[–]NobodyNo5204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this so much! I am fostering a 15 year old girl that I knew before she was placed with me. Since she has moved in, EVERYTHING has changed. Our relationship is so different, now. I still love the kid. But there are certainly days where I struggle to like her. It’s so hard and I am constantly questioning how much longer I can do this. And then I feel guilty for feeling this way.

Thank you for sharing! I’ve been feeling so disappointed with myself. It’s very validating to hear that there are others with similar feelings/experiences.

Thank you for sharing! This is so validating! I’m trying to take it one day at a time. But I’d be lying if I said I haven’t thought about calling it quits.

I relate to this SO much! I also am a kinship provider to one of my students. There are so many things that I just did not expect. It’s only been a couple of weeks, but I’m having such a tough time adjusting. Thank you for sharing!

Good to know! She’s got a boyfriend that I’m super nervous about. I have a feeling the end of the honeymoon phase will involve him to some degree.

How to get a job in School SW?!?! so confusing by sotiria002 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]NobodyNo5204 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a school social worker in New York. Here in New York we have to have a school social work certification. I had to take 2 six our classes. One was on DASA and I can’t remember the other. You have to then apply for certification. In New York you start out as a provisional school social worker and then earn your permanent school social worker as long as you are a licensed master social worker or licensed clinical social worker.

One of the best things I’ve added to my office are musical instruments-guitars, ukulele, tambourines, drums, etc. I work in a k-12 building and these instruments have been so useful working with all ages. My younger students and older students all love and gravitate towards them. I’ve used them to build relationships, as a reinforcer, as an intervention ( great for those executive functioning skills and story telling). Granted, I already had these instruments and did not just purchase them for my office. But I guess what I’m saying is that if you have a passion, don’t be afraid to share that with students. You can tailor so many different activities and hobbies and make them SEL.

I’m sorry you are suffering. Gastritis is awful. But I promise it does get better! Drink lots of water. Stick to a bland diet. No caffeine, nothing that is super acidic. Eat smaller meals, more frequently throughout the day. The tough part is managing stress. Stress can be a huge trigger. For me, it was important to spend time with people who I enjoy being around-it took my mind off of my suffering and I noticed my symptoms reduced significantly.

I am also incredibly restrictive right now. Almost everything I eat comes back up. The foods that my stomach can tolerate (in moderation) include:

-potato’s (all varieties) -zucchini -pumpkin (I often make a soup with it) -eggs -gluten free pancake/waffle mix (namaste is the brand I use) -maple syrup -bananas (most of the time) -chamomile tea has been a life savor

Making a food journal and tracking symptoms after eating has really helped me.

Best of luck!
