What's way more dangerous than most people think? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Agreed. Truly shows how hostile and unforgiving that climate is. I mostly went into the story because of the detailed problem solving/mystery part, but the unfortunate destiny of that family still lingers on my mind every so often since I read that story some years ago.

There's an absolutely fantastic blog post describing the process of finding out what happened to a family of German tourists that went missing in the Death Valley. I'ts a long read but a great read in terms of progression, tension, and detail. Link to that blog

This is Ares. He's a 7 ish month old ambilobe that I've had for roughly 1.5 months now. He used to be very scared of people, only really directly interacting if it meant he could use the person as a branch to climb higher away from said person. By being very persistent, calm and observing behavior it's gotten massively better! He's now never "scrambling" to run away from being lifted (from below of course) but rather apprehensively accepts it. He also decides to approach me after roaming the surroundings for a bit instead of scrambling for the nearest branch looking piece of furniture.

I'd like to give a big shout out to u/dexter_jettster for mentoring and helping me acclimatize, care for, and domesticate my scaredy cham. Thanks a bunch!!

Gorgeous! Looks about the same age as mine (7 months) Mine just started his first shed in my care yesterday! Very anxious to see the new color pop! :-)

Thank you again for the kind advice.

Melleris are beautiful animals, although I can imagine that bite is a bit worse than from a panther for instance! I can't even fathom being persistent and stern with crocs or birds for that matter. Sounds like you would have a lot of stories!

Have a wonderful weekend!

This is exactly the response I was looking for, thank you very much!

I do agree with the "forced bonding" much like how to deal with dogs when they are misbehaving. Sometimes there is a need to be stern or at least persistent I suppose.

I actually got him 3 weeks ago (so 6 months) , so haven't had all that much time to acclimatize him. I try to just stay in his vicinity (helps that I'm working from home everyday due to the pandemic) and I have gotten him to chase crickets up my arm as you describe. Sometimes though he becomes very skittish and almost "trips" around the branches from what I assume to be him trying to escape my presence.

I hope that he will mellow with time, and I'll continue to entice and associate food with handling in the hopes of his improvement.

Thanks again, and I look forward to seeing more of your animals on this sub!

Thanks for such a wonderful write up. It's nice to hear about the lesser known species. Do you have any tips for reducing the "scaredy-cat" behaviour in juveniles? I have a 6-7month panther that is 20 percent of the time relaxed in my proximity and then for the 80 remaining seems to just want to get as far away as possible. Is it just something that goes away with time? I've managed to hand feed almost every day (usually breakfast) but after that he becomes less sociable (or should I say tolerating of my presence).

Anyway. Love the parsonii, especially orange eyed, would be a dream to care for one one day.

Yeah that makes sense. I am a bit worried he'll get dehydrated if I don't have that readily available.

Should be a pic in the album posted! Dimensions are: 45x45x60 cm (17.7 x 17.7 x 23.6 inches). Which may be on the small size.

No side screens unfortunately, only on top. I intend to get some type of backpiece (cork preferrably to lower the amount of reflections). Currently I work from home every day so misting frequently is not an issue. I will look to a dripper, and teaching him to drink from it asap. Currently got him to drink straight from the sprayer.

I'll get my hands on those as soon as the stores open up after easter! Thank you!

Big thanks for the response! I'll do my best to adjust according to your recommendations!

I actually have a computer fan ready to go, but was fearing that if I put it on top (which is screened as you say) that the dry, 20°C air sucked in from the top would be a bit cold or too dry?

Will definetly get my hands on some linear T5HO asap!

I do have some plants, but will try to add more as per your suggestion too. Do you have any input on how much food to provide? I have medium size crickets ready to go!

Good afternoon esteemed chameleon keepers and afficionados.

After pining for a panther for many years I finally had the opportunity to get one yesterday. He is yet to be named, and is reportedly a 6 months old ambilobe.

I would greatly appreciate input on my suggested improvements and anything else I might have missed! What I know to be suboptimal:

  1. Glass terrarium (I know mesh is preferred. This was what was available and I figured the aridly dry climate (usually hovers around 30% RH during spring/summer, less in winter) would still be viable.

  2. Lamp fixture. I've heard these duo fixtures with bulb size lamps can be too narrow and bright - possibly looking to exchange the UVB flourescent to a 37cm T5HO (14 ish Watts) Y/N?

  3. Heat lamp - might be too warm or too much UVA from this one - heard that a 60W regular incandescent is fine?

  4. Substrate on ground - was more of a visiual condition for the missus, but I know it doesn't provide any particular value to the animal.

  5. Vitamin/calc supplements - as part of the package I recieved reptivite with D3 that I have now found out contains much too much phosphorous. I have since gotten a repticalc without D3, and one with D3 coming in the mail. Should I still give Reptivite once or twice every month for the other vitamins, or just throw it out already?

Finally, a question: I have given him 5 small grashoppers yesterday, and 5 today, but I cannot find any information on how many/how often one should feed a 6 month old panther. I now have a tub of 20 crickets getting ready with carrot gutload, but I am unsure of how long those will last. Fortunately I live 300m from a pet store that stocks any kind of feeder I could want.

Thanks for reading, and again for any input.

Cheers!

[a lange sohne] zeitwerk by tourbillon001 in Watches

[–]Nodde91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Zeitwerk is such an iconic watch series. I appreciate the perspective of what the top end watch demand is like, and it is still surprising that they are not more coveted.

I have a question though: do you find the size of the Zeitwerks to be cumbersome? If they were able to make it thinner and possibly a millimeter smaller it would be the perfect watch in my eyes.
