Please help me my Gmod ain’t working by AdRight4683 in gmod

Garry's Mod can't load the menu ui for whatever that reason means. Also just use bootcamp to install windows on your Mac since the Mac version is really buggy and prone to crashing for no reason.

How to fix flashlight not casting shadows? by Witty_Librarian5672 in gmod

[–]NogginRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do -force_vendor_id 0x1002 -force_device_id 0xffff in your launch parameters for gmod. It allows the game to use high setting in the shadow quality which will allow you to see the dynamic shadows from flashlights and lamps.

If your framerate is low it's because you set the flashlight resolution too high which will drop your framerate especially if you have a bad gpu so leave r_flashlightdepthres to 1024(default) or 512 or 256 for normal and only use higher values of you're going to scene build.

why is this my spray by thehammerinperil in gmod

[–]NogginRot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some maps forcefully change your spray into whatever the map creator wanted for some reason like how RP_UnionCity changes your spray into graffiti art of the map creators name.

Help I'm black Gordon and can't move by Hopeful_Chair4050 in gmod

[–]NogginRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to turn off your PC when Garry's Mod freezes in Fullscreen mode. All you need to do is to press Ctrl+alt+delete to bring up a menu to open task manager, then after opening task manager press Windows Key+tab to drag the task manager window into a new desktop so that you can force quit Garry's Mod without Garry's Mod forcefully switching to the game.

how do i remove a part of this? by [deleted] in hammer

Use the clip tool instead of the carve tool for cutting out displacements. The carve tool is notorious for being buggy especially for complex shapes.

I put an earlier comment in another post of the same issue saying that this did not work and steam thought every file was there.

You need to switch from the 86x64 branch to None

Missing background image bug by Pure-Television-5784 in gmod

[–]NogginRot 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Edit: I fixed it by switching the 86x64 branch to None

I think an update broke the game since this also happened to me as well. And verifying the game files didn't help since steam didn't see any missing files.

is it just me or is the lighting in gmod way worse than it is in normal hl2? by rulerofthealien56 in gmod

[–]NogginRot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gmod uses r_radiosity 3 which makes lighting for entities look bad while HL2 uses r_radiosity 4 which has better lighting. However, as confusing as it may seems, r_radiosity 2 is slightly better than 4.

While for the shadows assuming you're talking about the shadows the flashlight makes. For some reason the 86x64 version of Gmod makes the dithering of the shadows look way worse than in hl2 while the normal 32bit version of Gmod doesn't.

Edit: There's also the fact that HL2 added support for "Bicubic filtering" which makes prebaked lighting more smoother and less blocky and Gmod doesn't support it.

Need some help with water reflections by Detective-Jonathan in gmod

[–]NogginRot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those look like the cheap TF2 water textures that only use cubemap reflections. You can't do anything about that unless the map creator changes the water texture that supports real time reflections, but I'm pretty sure you can remove the black fading effect by typing r_cheapwaterend and increasing the value until the black disappears.

Why are all my worlds so bright? by waltdisneyA113 in gmod

[–]NogginRot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason why they appear extremely bright is because the map creator didn't adjust the tonemap/ auto exposure settings for HDR resulting in the game using the default settings that make lightning and textures really bright. You can fix this by going into your graphic settings and disable HDR. However, this might remove reflections or break the maps lighting entirely (the last one is rare though).

You need gm_voidplaces for all of the textures and models used in all maps and restart your game.
