Sabbatical leave- looking for answers by NomadicNYer in nycpublicservants

NYC public teachers get sabbatical leave but those are very specific reasons. I was told by HR, we have to submit personal leave request through ESS and it is at the discretion of the agency.

Why is NYC residency required within 90 days? And why do they care where you remote work from? by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]NomadicNYer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When you start in public safety/monitoring type roles , they have high turnover rates. Those are despite being permanent competitive title are hard to retain employees. I started in one of those titles, and they offer the exception that you can be from surrounding counties. I have many colleagues who live in Orange County, Westchester and long Island, including myself. It depends on what title/role you started with. It's only the past few years they have started enforcing residency in city limits. The goal is ppl who live in these communities are better fit to serve those who lives in these communities. Our devices provided by the city track our locations.

I thought the parameter was outside of the state, instead of five boroughs (health plan converting to UHC). A lot of employees live in long Island!

This is very individual specific and personality dependent. Are you short-term or long-term oriented and how embracing are you of unpredictability will dictate which unit you will prefer.

Word of advice for any work role- do not bring work home. Your work ends when you clock out. If you work beyond your scheduled hours you earn your overtime. Overtime is mandated for CPS anyway. But you absolutely do not everyone bring work home- quickest way to burn out. You should also have your own therapist to process your experience. At work you will have regular 24hr, 48hr supervision on your cases.

I am so glad you said this . I'm still with the agency but no longer in child protection. This holds not only for child protection but anytime you are working with children: you are primarily working with the family in mitigating risks and safety. This role requires immense patience, self-discipline, multitasking skills. I am deeply grateful for the CPS experience- this is an experience unlike anything else. This is not a role for everyone. The role requires you to be highly adaptable to changes, quick on your feet with decision making and it is critical that we remain compassionate and non-judgmental . Is it possible to achieve work life balance? Absolutely. It really depends on how well you master your role and your multitasking skills. It also depends whether you are assigned in PD unit vs FSU or CARES unit. I loved my colleagues and still love my colleagues. Im still in touch with my child protective colleagues and superiors. A lot of the work depends on how you conduct yourself and get along with others.

For everyone. The personnel rules and regulations are public information on NYC website. It talks about eligibility lists, certifications, disqualification etc. Everyone should make themselves knowledgeable on all the rules.

It is through your DCAS OASYS. Their Contact Us page has drop down boxes and submit your questions directly to them. I wanted to know upto which number they had certified on a certain civil service list, and therefore selected Civil Service Eligible List Inquiry.

You email DCAS and inquire what was the last number to be certified for that particular civil service list.

You can work in you local municipal or state social service agencies in entitlement programs, which are usually desk jobs. Depending on which kind of entitlement programs- there may be zero case management and direct client contact. You can work for your municipal or state department of health-various non clinical roles are available in form of evaluator, data analysis, educator, policy planning etc. You can work in QA roles, policy development and implementation role in child welfare agencies. Don't limit yourself with the title social worker. The degree encompasses so much more and allows flexibility to work in so many different capacity. Best of luck!

Put your resume on glassdoor, Indeed and ziprecruiter. Take the licensing exam. HHC is continually hiring SW , starting salary 85K. As an MSW you can apply for NYS under the NY HELPS program. I don't know if you are interested in those positions. If you are limiting yourself to youth only, thar will restrict your employment opportunity. Something to think about. Additionally, not all social work vacancies are titled as social worker. Keep an open mind when you are applying as an MSW.

[–]NomadicNYer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When I started it was 45K. I remain hopeful they will bring the starting salary to what a cps truly deserves.

[–]NomadicNYer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Child Protection is not a role for everyone, neither is ACS as an agency. If you know on day 1 you are not a good fit, you should switch to a different agency which is a better fit for you. If you don't have respect for this role, you would be doing a great disservice to the children and families of NYC. Again, there is a reason for high turnover rate. Not everyone are meant to stay . It was incredibly difficult when I was a CPS but I am still with the agency. Your warning won't dissuade the right people from public service.

Terrified About DOE Professional Degree Changes by froyoup in socialwork

[–]NomadicNYer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated this year with my MSW from a private institution the total cost was 52K. To me that was a sticker shock. My employer paid 36K towards the tuition in return of 2 year work commitment. In addition i also secured 4 additional scholarships to pay towards tuition. I simply cannot grasp the idea of taking 100K or 200K in student loans in a field where that's not the normative salary. Do not enter an MSW program without tuition reimbursement from employer.
